I don't understand the complaints either. It's all about recognizable music and hitting your demo. The average listener doesn't care if a song is burnt to a crisp. They want to hear their favorite songs. No program director in their right mind would program a bunch of B-sides, obscure album cuts and stiffs in regular programming. That's for specialty shows...that's where they'll hook you. Some stations even sell these specialty shows separate from the rest of the day. This holds true with most formats.

The ratings get higher the more older songs they add.
I don't understand the complaints.
I just looked at the playlist history for the last several hours and it's a pretty nice variety from the 60s to the 2000s.
The issue I see though is the Evanescence fan is likely going to tune out when Black Sabbath comes on, and vice versa.

A lot of the people I see on this board want the radio stations to be their personal jukebox. That's never going to happen.
You need to think as a program director.
The problem and the complaining stem from the fact that they came on the scene claiming to be the "Next generation of Classic Rock". Then they proceeded to play a ton of the same stuff WCSX plays while ignoring a ton of great music from the 80's and 90's...which, in theory, is what the next generation should be.
Further, now they have moved even more toward a WCSX clone with the likes of "Hotel California" etc. Your posts seem to imply that there isnt a market for great rock music from the 80's and 90's and I think thats bullshit. Fuck you WLLZ.

My wife left me. My kids won't look at me. My house was foreclosed. My car, totaled. Street lights went out. Businesses closed. The rocks melted. Men are jumping from buildings. Women are weeping in the streets. Children are aimlessly staring at the sky. Anarchy in the streets. Gunshots. Burning buildings. Animals darting in front of cars. Looting. Rioting. Mass suicides.

All because WLLZ strayed from the only 150 songs sanctioned for FM radio consumption (because apparently anything not on that list of 150 is a b-side, stiff, album track, unheard of, etc.) and played Tie Your Mother Down instead of Bohemian Rhapsody this afternoon. Oh noes!

BTW, nice to hear Anne Carlini today!

When I managed an ice cream store, I programmed just a 25 song playlist to play over and over all day.
You want the listener to hear something they love during the say 15 minutes they're listening.

A typical radio listener isn't going to sit there and listen for 8 hours and complain that songs are repeating.

Sam, to be honest, I hear that more than anything. Other than a preproduction commercial, I always hear about how these guys always play the same shit, and that's why they don't listen to the radio. I never hear anything positive. Nobody said it had to be side 2 of a late 60s Pink Floyd album followed by Rush's longest songs. Wheels had done it right with the deep track of the day, or one every 3-4 hours. 24 hours in a day, 5-10 minutes for something not played in a while is just fine. I mean, people stream out here on job sites because they can't handle it. The only stations that have had those moments lately are Alt and WRIF.

98.7's playlist has become stale again, in my opinion.

Same songs from the same artists day, after day, after day. I don't need to hear Gotye or Gorillaz multiple times a day each day.

On what planet is Gotye's 80s synth pop sounding song "alternative rock" ?

I can't understand why WLLZ isn't playing any of the following AOR material:

Newer songs by Rush
Jethro Tull (WAHS played Aqualung earlier)
Deep Purple (Perfect Strangers, etc)
More Yes from the 80's
More from The Police
Faith No More "Last Cup of Sorrow"
XYZ "Inside Out"
More Queensryche
Thunder "Dirty Love"
Contraband "All the Way from Memphis"
Led Zeppelin III's lost cut "Traveling Riverside Blues"
Cracker "Low" (WRIF plays it)

These are off the top of my head, but speaking as a guy formerly involved in rock radio, there's a lot of missing material here that were not "stiffs" by any means. Throw rotten fruit if you like. I've been out of the game a long time.

I, and I'm sure a ton of other people, would take any of these before another Bob Seger or Eagles spin.
How about anything from F.U.C.K from Van Halen? Quite a few great rock and roll tunes on that one.
Tesla?
Black Crowes?
Janes Addiction?
RHCP (aside from the god-forsaken Under the bridge)
There are tons of great songs from the 80's and 90's WLLZ should be playing.

I'll tell you what.

The day I don't hear Queen on WOMC, WCSX or WLLZ before noon, I'll take everyone out for Dairy Queen.

Add to that the day I don't hear them on WHMI, WIOT or WMMQ, steak dinners for the forum on me.

Also missing on Wheels:

Robert Plant solo tracks
The Firm
Montrose "Rock Candy"
Blue Murder "Jelly Roll" (look it up)
The Tubes "Talk to ya Later"
Saraya
Midnight Oil
Sammy Hagar (other than "55")
Rainbow "Stone Cold" (w/Joe Lynn Turner)
Eric Clapton "Bad Love" "The Core"
Firehouse "Don't Treat Me Bad"
Frozen Ghost "Should I See"
Giant "Chained"
Blue Oyster Cult "Godzilla"
The Cars "Moving In Stereo" "Bye Bye Love"
Porno For Pyros "Pets"
The Church "Under the Milky Way"
Asia "Go"
The Alarm "Sold Me Down the River"

I love it when Podell plays Iron Maiden "The Trooper". There's no reason to not have that in some sort of regular rotation.
