John O'Leary RIP

Post by SolarMax » Mon Nov 22, 2021 7:24 am

John O'Leary has passed away. Many will remember him from multiple past stops along the Detroit Rock FM dial, WABX, WWWW, WLLZ, others. Details will probably be available later from the usual sites.

I just heard John on a podcast with Ron Robinson a few weeks ago. What a shock hearing of John's passing. John is a Detroit Radio Legend, R.I.P. Brother. Motor City Radio Flashbacks has a tribute to John O'Leary.

I'm hearing from very reliable sources that John was in fact a murder victim. Perpetrator is in custody. More details forthcoming.

Motive unknown, circumstances unknown, further details unknown at this time.

Stabbed by his roommate is the story.

Radio Ink takes his bio back to a stint at WILS-FM.

Condolences to those who worked with and knew him, does anyone have an idea about when he was in Lansing? Thanks.

I remember the names Clyde Shue (sp?) and "Slick" Vic Curtis from my days listening to 101-ILS in the early 80s. I worked there several months after graduating from MSU, in the sketchy "Love Songs 102" period.

Based on a Detroit News article that details John's history going from Specs in the mid 70s to W4, I would guess it was several years before my time.

Truly horrible, deeply disturbing news. I send my sincerest condolences to all who knew him.

He also worked at the former WIQB in Ann Arbor.

I certainly remember hearing him there as well as WCSX, where he was a much better fit.

I worked at WILS in the late 70s but do not remember John. However, the Clyde Shew name sure rings a bell. And I knew a Brad Curtis at 101.

Absolute fucking shame. Where many became jaded over all the years, John still truly enjoyed opening the mic. The whole situation is terrible.

His death was the leading story on Channel 4's 11 PM News.

John's career stops are listed here, and also found on his LinkedIn page: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-o-leary-8138bb6

A horrible story to have to hear. I remember listening to John over the years, and he always sounded natural on the air, which suited him well. Condolences to those who knew John from his many years both in the industry and in the area.

Sad news indeed……

He has a voice that was distinctive and I remember him well.

I had him on a radio recording years ago just taping music off the air somewhere around Jan of 1986 while on WLLZ. He was promoting the Auto Show and possibly Autorama… which would then have been February.

RIP John ;-(
