1450 WHLS missing from the AM dial lately

Post by Marcus » Thu Sep 02, 2021 5:09 pm

Rock 105.5 continues to be heard on the FM signal. WIth WHLS missing I was able to hear 1440 WMKM Inskter (1 KW D.A.) 1450 WLEC from Sandusky, OH (1 KW), and even 1460 WPON from Oakland county (670 watts D.A.). On 1450 there is what sounds like a dead carrier and it is much weaker than what the WHLS signal normally is. The time I was listening was a little past mid afternoon.

On our last stay at the river, WHLS was definitely there. Perhaps an email to Chuck Santoni wouldn't hurt. My main contact was Bob Liggett himself, and sadly, he's no longer with us. With a small staff, they may not be aware of the problem.

I grew up North of Detroit, but have lived south of it the last few years.

Last weekend, I traveled way up north (Stony Creek Metropark) to see my great nephew (on his first birthday) for the first time last weekend.

After the party broke up, I decided to see some of the places I would go to years ago.

1590 was weaker than I remember it being decades ago. It has an unusual rock and country format.

1450 was extremely weak at the I-69 exit about 10 miles north of Richmond, from where I continued southward.

I remember it being quite listenable. I suspect that when they added the FM translator, they made no effort to tune the mast to effectively radiate their AM signal.

In response to loss of signal strength on the AM band it seems worse on some stations than others. It's not just the small market radio stations either. A few decades ago I remember 550 WGR Buffalo and 570 WKBN Youngstown having nearly the same signal strength in Sarnia (during the daytime). Now WGR is as weak as 610 WTVN Columbus and 530 CHLO Brampton-Toronto which is only 1,000 watts.

One station that seems as strong as it's ever been is 1500 WLQV from Detroit.

WLQV (formerly WJBK, among others) has an amazing signal strength for a station near the top of the band.

The daytime directional array beams right at St. Clair County, with a booming signal in Memphis (MI).

The nine-tower array produces a greater ERP than the 50kW transmitter would produce with an omnidirectional antenna.

Also helping the signal is the fact that St. Clair County has decent soil conductivity.

I checked 550 WGR with a CCRadio 2e at a picnic table away from my apartment building and it turns out that it is not quite as weak as I thought. It just gets attenuated (reduced) in my apartment more so than a number of other AM stations. The same thing happens to 680 from Toronto.
