Your favorite Detroit airchecks from back in the day

Post by jadednihilist » Wed Jan 20, 2021 12:59 am

Continuing with the great 89X air checks posted, I have to start with Alan Almond's Pillow Talk on WNIC:

Throwback to 93.1 DRQ:

Planet 96.3:

and it wasn't that long ago that WOMC still sounded great:

V98.7:

here's one from the Legendary Big 8 CKLW unscoped with Charlie VanDyke as guest DJ for a million dollar weekend 1976.....

A station that used to boom in at night into the motorcity from the windy city I listened to Michigan native John Landecker on WLS 890 . John at that time had 5 million listeners across a large portion of the US and Canada every evening.

A blast from the past for alot of Detroit/Windsor Z Rockers and WDZR Z Rock 102.7 . Z Rock Ready performed by a band called Bellicose signed on new Z Rock affiliates as they went on the air. WDZR signed on the network with Z Rock Ready followed by Detroit Rock City and jock Jason Lee Tipton screaming "Z Rock INVADES DETROIT".

Thanks for sharing. I'm just young enough to not have appreciated WLLZ in its heyday (they signed off when I was 7). I've always heard great things about the original Wheels, so I'm glad I got to hear at least a sample of what a true competitor to WRIF sounded like.

I am going to gradually try and catch up to the other airchecks shared here a bit later.

who's got Steve Dahl aborting his return to Detroit radio by shutting down the feed to 97.1 mid show?

Yeah, you bet. I can remember for a while they were straddling the line but went completely modern rock in mid 1995. It's been said Wheels was a dead man walking when they got wind of the smooth jazz format making inroads nationally. I can recall them playing "December" by Collective Soul every 6th song and thinking "Oh, it must be because it's December now". No, the playlist was down to about 150 songs and they were gonna pull the plug anyway. I missed them for a long time; I had something like 3 or 4 other options for rock but kept drifting back to them. This is why it's cool to hear Nirvana and Pearl Jam and Offspring and Green Day on 98.7 again, like it's 1995!
