CFCO's only purpose in life is to feed the puny FM translator that operates at 92.9 MHz in Chatham. Similarly, CHOK's only purpose in life is to feed its puny FM translator that operates at 103.9 MHz near Sarnia.

CFCO's nighttime signal goes to crap quickly after dark as you head south of Windsor.

Canada doesn't have a big stable of syndicated shows that can be used to fill airtime on smaller market stations. And if CFCO tries to clear U.S.-based shows that are already heard in the Detroit market, they will run into major resistance.

Both WYCD and WDRQ have significant interference issues in the Chatham-Kent area. CJWF cannot be heard there. CJSP has a crappy signal there. Programming country on CFCO makes a lot of sense, IMO.

I don't believe for a split second that CKLW actually commands a 17 share in Windsor. People write down call letters they are able to recall. Given the fact CKLW (apparently) refuses to properly rebuild its transmission plant, I suspect things there aren't as rosy as some of us assume.

Day & night, ever since the transmitter plant fire, CKLW's signal has been frail at my location 20 miles northwest of downtown Detroit.

I have no idea what type of numbers CFCO earns in Chatham-Kent, but the Blackburn offerings on the FM dial in the Windsor area seem to be performing decently, especially when one considers CJWF, CHYR and CKUE-1 have much lower power bills than CIDR and CIMX.

I will likely be the lone dissenting vote here, but I actually find it refreshing to hear "New Rock" on 89X. This may come as a shock to you youngsters, but back in the days of AOR, we didn't always know if a song was going to be a "stiff" or not. Weekly music meetings included the PD, MD, GM, and whoever was consulting (on speaker phone) not to mention R&R, Gavin, and Billboard. Not sure how 89X is testing new music, but "stiffs" or not, I find myself spending more time there lately. There's no fear of the next song being overplayed AC/DC, GNR, or Motley Crue.

Bill Gamble had a tough time years ago, with the "New Rock" approach on 94.7 WZZN Chicago. 89X reminds me of that, somewhat. WZZN had a far superior airstaff than 89X, however, by far.

I'll duck now, as the rotten fruit is probably incoming. :lol

Im sure that Blackburn could use its translator in chatham to simulcast CJWF country like the Cool FM stations and go it alone on AM630 if there was a will to do it.

There is a lot of synd talk across Canada they could hook into that we don't hear down in these parts without looking to the US.And yes the one drawback of the 630 signal is reduced power or direction after sunset towards Essex Co. but the daytime signal is very good which is all they need imo.

Also the times Ive been in Chatham the Detroit FM's do come in strong theyre not that far away.Ive been through the dial with no noticeable issues from the D.

The one strong Clev. rocker WMMS , Blackburn put a kibosh to as they put the Windsor translator on 100.7.They were more than happy to do that as they noticed back then that WMMS was on a lot of chatham residents presets.

And as been already said, without the Detroit stations comparison numbers theyre worthless.85% of Windsor area listeners if on am/fm are listening to Detroit.

The FM stations based in Windsor combine for about 25 percent of total listening there, if we assume the Numeris numbers are reasonably accurate.

There are few successful commercial news/talk outlets in Canada outside of the major metro areas. The content just isn't there.

I doubt the CRTC would approve use of 92.9 to rebroadcast CJWF.

93.1 and 99.5 both suffer from co-channel interference from Cleveland near Lake Erie.

There are few news/talk stations in Canada outside of major markets, period. There is no way CFCO would make anything as a news talk station targeting Chatham. The CRTC can be strict about stations serving areas outside of their market, so attempting to directly go after CKLW with Windsor programming and advertising would likely be denied.

Last time I was on the 401 near Chatham, the Detroit FMs and even some AMs were fairly solid.

To what extent does the WNUC-LP signal mess with CHYR's reception in Windsor? If the interference is significant, perhaps River is taking the place of Mix 96.7 as the workplace station of choice.
A look at some of the Detroit area translators that actually do get out - mostly 99-watters - shown by my radio work in both Monroe and Mitchell's Bay (northeast side of Lake St. Clair in Chatham-Kent), about 30-40 miles from all the towers but in different directions:

The only good thing I can think of regarding the CRTC is that programs on out of market TV stations are only blacked out/subbed over if they air at the exact same time as an in-market station
