The rise of translators on cochannel frequencies where adjacent market stations used to come in quite well reminds me of Cuban Jamming of US stations. About all you can do is get a good directional outside antenna. The k6sti site has plans for modifications of stock antennas (almost all are out of stock and no longer made) and antennas you can make if you are handy enough. Some of these have 30 dB F/Side and Back Lobe ratios which theoretically could pick up signals 30 times weaker than your local jamming station. One is a plan using parts theoretically available from Home Depot.

Too bad that John Kraus and O.G. Villard, Jr. aren't still alive. Maybe they could have deigned an Indoor FM anti jamming antenna!

Here's one for AM BC/SW, designed by O.G. Villard.

I too, grew up in the west burbs, where lansing, ann arbor, toledo, and flint markets were side by side with detroit. I now live in RF hell (oakland county), and even visiting the old stomping grounds of washtenaw county nowadays shows how much the radio landscape has changed (for the worse in my opinion)
