I didn't know Gary from Tawas went so far back with Ron. Great stories. As I suspected, Ron was often snoozing on the air.

Could Alex be on the phone? And who's the producer in the studio coming up?

Here's an interesting take on Ron. It was published on June 1, 1997 in the Detroit Sunday Journal, a newspaper launched by journalists who went on strike from the News and Free Press in 1995 and didn't go back.

It's an article about how Detroit became the hockey capital of the world, just before the Red Wings won the first of their four Stanley Cups in the 1990s and 2000s. The article lists the "people, events and things that transformed a major American metropolis into the world’s capitale du hockey."

"Ron Cameron: Before there was The Fan radio, there was the self described Super Fan on the radio. Cameron might have been bombastic and crude, but he was perhaps the only sportscaster in town who took hockey seriously in the late 1970s and early 1980s when he talked daily on then-WXYZ-AM. He did three things most sportscasters don’t do today: He broke stories, criticized players and spoke intelligently about hockey."

Here's something that supports what Gary just said about Ron's support for the Red Wings.

It's got to be Matt who always would "come in on Ron"

The nicking of Budd Lynch on the Bob-Ron show, maybe Ron found out Budd had kicked in on that "send Ron to umpire school fund." Of course that low bridge wouldn't work today!

21-year old Alex (2012) didn't know who Ron was.

Ron probably preyed on the innocent to staff his short-lived restaurants.

All these nice things people are saying about Scoop, the next of kin of Jim Price and Beckman should be calling in to give their thoughts of Ron Cameron. Also amongst the living, Jason Thompson, Chris McCoskey, Petzgold amongst the others.

What a catch—Joe LaPointe. Ron's best newspaper friend in the late 70s and early 80s.
