Let AMs on HD-2s ID as AM CALL-HD-2

Post by CK-722 » Fri Dec 20, 2019 2:09 pm

This FCC HD-2 ID requirement is just plain silly. Let WJR (WDVD-HD-2) and WWJ (WXYT-HD-2), etc. ID as WJR-HD-2 and WWJ-HD-2, etc. There's no conflict at all. The other callsign just causes confusion for the listeners.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Same (x, y, z), different (t)

The legal ID goes with the transmitter. 97.1 is licensed as WXYT-FM and it has an HD-1 and HD-2 digital which must ID as WXYT-FM HD1 and WXYT-FM HD2 regardless of what audio is on them. The AM should ID as "WWJ and WWJ HD" (although I have not heard that form of TOH ID from them in a while). "WXYT HD2" is satisfying the legal ID requirement for the 97.1 FM transmitter.
"WWJ-HD-2" would imply that WWJ is transmitting an HD2 on 950 kHz, not a thing on the AM band.

Any "confusion" could be alleviated by WWJ occasionally mentioning its FM presence on 97.1 HD2 during the dozens of imaging sweepers dropped in during the course of a typical hour.

Since it digital, what the point of an aural callsign? Callsign plus HD-2/3/4 makes little sense either. I see no issue with requesting a HD-2 callsign mapped to the other stations audio. Much like PSIP for TV.

If it's analog it could be helpful to track down he source of interference, but in digital it could be put in the digital bit stream, such as image file at top of hour.

Translators can currently use FSK.

Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!

I don't understand WHY iHeart HIDES the fact that they have a decent stereo HD signal on their FM HD-2? For example, WSPD ID's TOH as "newradio 1370 WSPD, Toledo, then a very fast weak hidden "WRVF-HD2" heard -6dB down and at twice the speed, and "Also heard on 92.9 FM".
Why do they bury the HD so far down? While in the city in the usable HD signal area, I listen to Scott's show in stereo on WRVF-HD2, rather than mono on a scratchy 92.9FM or okay mono audio on 1370 (which they could run analog stereo on, should iHeart allow them). Why hide the HD-2? And for that matter, I have NEVER heard one advertisement for WRVF-HD3, as I am probably their only listener of "The Breeze' there?
