CKWW
CKWW
Last night on my way home from work, I listened to CKWW. It was it's usual solid-gold format. This morning at 6:30, they were broadcasting Family Life radio. What gives? Is AM580, Family Life's clearance for Detroit? And, is only in certain dayparts? Is Family Life buying time to clear Detroit? What gives?
Re: CKWWat
Are you sure it was FLR and not some short feature like or similar to Focus on the Family? Could it be another 580 like WYHM in Tennessee just powering up to 5000 watts? Or even WTCM powering up to 50000 watts at Sunrise? Lots of more rural stations or in smaller markets have short "Inspirational" features.
Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

My guess is another station on AM 580 was overpowering CKWW.

Re: CKWW
I really wish CKWW could be on 800 or 93.9. Just saying.

Re: CKWW
AM 800's signal is no better than AM 580's these days in some areas.
Granted, 800 is listenable deep into Ohio whereas 580 is not.

Re: CKWW
CKLW has a highly-directional signal to the east. This wasn't always the case, but since the programming has changed over the years and is geared more toward a Canadian audience, the signal pattern has followed suit.
There were a couple of attempts to revive the Big 8 format on CKLW-FM in the 80's and 90's, but it just didn't gain enough steam. Still, it was a great listen. 93.9 has (or had) almost as good a signal into Cleveland as 800. I remember getting it solid on a road trip along the Ohio Turnpike from Cleveland to Toledo, then up along US-23 and I-96 all the way to Howell. My guess is that the open water across Lake Erie conducted the signal with very little obstruction.

Shortwave is the ORIGINAL satellite radio.
Re: CKWW
WTCM has overpowered CKWW at times in the Detroit area.
Last I checked, the only non musical programming they air is the weekend morning public affairs show, from 6 to 6:30 or 7. They even dumped the Saturday morning brokered investment show.

Re: CKWW
A couple of years ago when CKWW's signal was unusually strong for a couple of months (perhaps because they were running more than their licensed 500 watts, overmodulating, or whatever)l, I could hear them very listenably as far west as Lansing. Not quite as strong as CFCO, but about the same signal strength as CKLW. I took a drive out to Mentor, Ohio, one day, and their signal was as strong as CKLW's in Mentor if not stronger.

Re: CKWW
When CKLW-FM entered the Oldies derby, they may have been the seventh station to jump in to the game. WOMC's 190kW signal, combined with the fact that they had been known to run a lot of oldies along with some current AC material, won the Oldies fray.
If CIDR or CJOM were to go Oldies today, they would have zero true competitors.
I remember the time CKWW was being heard all over the metro area. They were obviously out of their assigned pattern, audible in Monroe, Farmington, and Taylor - but not as strong in Mount Clemens as it had been when all their power had been aimed at it.
One day, it was suddenly back on pattern - Booming into St. Clair county while being almost inaudible in Downriver - with carrier suppression in Wyandotte and fighting WILL in the daytime around DTW.

Re: CKWW
The time that CKWW was covering the Detroit area was more recent, like maybe 4 years ago to a year and a half ago.
Re: CKWW
More than likely, when you were hearing CKWW or CKLW, or any station, better in areas where you don't usually hear them well, if at all, and if they are directional and have nulls or small minor lobes in your direction, they are on nondirectional STA. Usually, under domestic rules and treaties, they run at no more than 1/4 of their normal power when on STA. In areas where the DA pattern is at or near maximum, the signal will be considerably less than usual. STA stands for Special Temporary Authority. It is often used when a DA is not operating properly due to damage to or deterioration of the antenna system.

Re: CKWW
No, my car radio was tuned to AM580 from the night before. It could have been some sort of feature. OR, CKWW was off the air for some short bit of time, and another distant station popped into the Detroit area. I listen to CKWW on a fairly regular basis. I work in Warren and drive on southbound I-75 through Detroit, and usually can hear CKWW, quite clearly.Jeff Dugan wrote: ↑Fri Jul 26, 2019 10:22 pmFamily Life radio would never be on a Canadian station, you may have heard a Family life station from another state on 580 I've been tuned to CKWW this morning and again this evening and they're still oldies.
