93.1 DRQ

Post by Steve79 » Fri Jul 05, 2019 2:35 pm

With Nash's low ratings, and a growing need for a party station/Rhytmic AC/Classic Dance station in the D, I think Now is the time to break out the old 93.1 the new DRQ tracks and bring back a station the plays feel good music from back in the day.
Would love this to happen!

I wouldn't look for anything to change at this time. With Cumulus unloading stations, The Detroit cluster could be next. Who knows... Crawford might get WDRQ :P

With the popularity of the new Wheelz, I believe this is coming.

"Do You Q in your Car" ??? the NEW 93.1 WDRQ is BAAACCKKK!!!!!

Back in the day this is one station that took numbers from the Big8.

F**K Trudeau and F**K CBC !!!!

There seems to be some revisionist history going on here. The Rhythmic AC version of WDRQ lasted only a few years before the station began pivoting toward CHR/Pop due to sluggish ratings. Ratings & billing improved considerably after the station went full-tilt CHR.

Those of you who long for such a format might be well served by checking out 97.7 Boston on iHeartRadio. It flipped from R&B to Rhythmic AC on July 3 and very much has late 80's / early 90's CHR-type stationality, complete with voiceovers from Eric Edwards. Those of you who really enjoyed DRQ's sound in 1995 & 1996 will likely love the Boston station.

I don't necessarily believe 93.1 needs to abandon Country. Cumulus just needs to deliver a better sounding Country station, which first and foremost means going LOCAL in morning drive.

I am hearing rumors that 93.1 may switch to a sports format.

On a related note, the Detroit Lions want to get back on the FM dial. They have no interest in returning to 97.1 because of Mike Valenti.

The new sports station on 93.1 would give the Lions an option.

Interesting!

93.1 flipping to sports would be AMAZING! However, it must have at least these three things to be successful . . .

1. A live and local morning drive
2. No Ryan Ermani hosting a weekday show
3. Some fresh on-air talent that aren't just rehashes of the past

I could not possibly disagree more.

Cumulus is not going to loosen the purse strings and dump a bunch of money in a new & extremely risky format in a market it may divest within the next 12 months.

If 93.1 were to flip to Sports, it would either be as part of a lease arrangement with an outside party (the Lions, Olympia, or perhaps the outfit behind the statewide syndication of Sean Baligian and Large) or it would be a low budget version variant of the format whose only purpose would be to serve as a placeholder until the station is unloaded.

What will more likely happen is Lions games will simply be simulcast on both 760 & 93.1, with 93.1 retaining the County format until the station is sold (assuming the Country format is generating at least a little positive cash flow). I cannot entirely rule out FM 93.1 being used to simulcast 760 on a full-time basis, though.
