It was back on yesterday. I was getting a signal all the way down in Monroe.

I'm 30 miles East, and I have yet to hear it stop the scan in the car. I check most days. In the early years the station was on, as WFEN and WACY, it would sometimes stop the scan in the Winter from Fenton, at circa 40 miles.

I noticed the nighttime CP was upgraded from 200 to 400 watts, allowing the station to retail Class B. However, I am not sure the nighttime covers the COL (Fenton). Surprised that one got through.

I think that the FCC dropped the requirement for NIF coverage of the COL. They had to upgrade, because they were already now considered to be Class B. So many station upgrades could have been done as Minor Changes that kept existing COLs, if they had done that before. With some the present towers, WCXI could be ~10000 watts Nighttime, serving Fenton quite well, by my rough calculations, possibly with a combination of some of the existing towers and perhaps two or three others. There is some discrepancy in the applications as to which tower tier is completed in the WPON Night array, East or West. If it were the West tier, maybe just one more tower, as the WPON Nighttime 3 tower tier could be the West tier of a Night array for WCXI.

Seriously, I still think the FCC should have provisions to go back to previous facilities or go to modified facilities like increased power with existing arrays, and COLs for stations adversely affected by previous and constantly changing rules. It's really like the rules being changed in the middle of sports events. "OK, now we are replacing Major League pitching mound and base separations with Little League Rules. Please bear with us while we implement this change and reconstruct the playing field."

WPON could move back to Pontiac at Square Lake and Telegraph with 1 kW with 282 mV/m @ 1 km reduced efficiency like they had before.

WWJ could move back to somewhere near 8 Mile and Meyers, with a 186 degree tower, or some skirting arrangement, with 5000 watts Daytime or whatever higher level is possible with measurements, and double or more than double their Field Intensity in many growing areas during the Day. Or better still, WXYT 5000 watts Nondirectional Days also, with a diplex like WSCR and WBBM, but with better results. And a smaller power bill. The 8 Mile and Meyers location is quite a bit better than 20777 10 Mile from ground wave standpoint, BTW.

Going back to the old facilities is no option.
One former site is covered with stores, the other covered with Mcmansions.

KEIB 1150 uses a DA on top of buildings in an industrial park. And it's diplexed as I recall, or was, with KTNQ. One tower on top of a building wouldn't be that difficult, for Daytime use, even a low power PSSA for WPON. The Royal Oak Township tower at 1 Radio Plaza is skirted for WRDT. If there's a will, there's a way. The point is, changes should be reversible. Perhaps not practical, but reversible. They could keep the Night for WWJ and WXYT, or modify if possible for improvement. And as a Day AUX at the Night site for working on a skirted main Day tower. WYLL has an AUX at Lockport for working on the Des Plaines Day site, now also a WIND AUX site.

Sadly, many of radio's greatest thinkers have recently passed away, at least two within the last few months.

I know the next round of criticism, "it's too expensive".

Are they still in testing mode? Signal is better here but I haven’t driven east enough lately to really judge it.

Any peep out of 1460?

WCXI seems to be on the air every day just playing music and periodically providing a station ID unlike WPON which as you know was playing oldies and providing the testing announcement. WPON is in another period of being off. I wonder if the testing for WPON is done and they're focusing on completing the testing for WCXI.

1160 was easily receivable from Ann Arbor when driving through today. It was strong enough to stop the seek.

Also they seem to be back to regular programming with whoever their on-air talent are. The signal for me is perfect however I am less than 3 miles from the new transmission site.

Nearly noise-free at Scheafer and I-96 in The D during my lunch break today!

NO SIGN of WPON 1460, only a very weak Spanish station and a very weak news station.

Signal of WCXI still sounds like horseshit in eastern Oakland County. It's audible, but it's not very loud, and there is considerable "fuzz." Sounds like a distant station as opposed to a local one.
