...so reports Inside Radio. Not just Detroit, but a bunch of other major market stations owned by Cumulus.

http://www.insideradio.com/cumulus-medi ... 17b09.html

http://www.insideradio.com/mary-berner- ... 61345.html

I've long suggested a Beasley acquisition of Cumulus' Detroit properties would make a lot of sense, and I continue to believe so!

But consider this: Entercom currently owns just six radio stations in Metro Detroit (four on FM, two on AM), thereby giving them capacity to acquire 1 additional FM station *and* 1 additional AM station.

I cannot help but wonder if Entercom would be interested in either WDRQ or WDVD + WJR.

The dilemma Cumulus faces under such a hypothetical scenario is this: If they were to sell WDRQ to Entercom, and then Entercom uses 93.1 MHz to simulcast AM 950 WWJ, the fair market value of 760 WJR immediately decreases! As such, I'd be a little bit surprised if Cumulus were to sell one of its FM signals to Entercom without also including 760 WJR in the deal (unless Cumulus already has a separate buyer lined up for WJR).

Possible scenarios:
- 96.3 WDVD to Beasley; 760 WJR and 93.1 WDRQ to Entercom;
- 96.3 WDVD to Entercom; 760 WJR and 93.1 WDRQ to Beasley;
- 93.1 WDRQ to an indie owner (Kevin Adell, for example); 96.3 WDVD and 760 WJR to either Entercom or Beasley;
- All three stations get sold to Beasley;
- Cumulus unloads the loser of the bunch (93.1 WDRQ) and holds onto 96.3 WDVD and 760 WJR indefinitely.

I would like to see Adell own a REAL radio station (i.e. 93.1) instead of that joke of a station he calls "910 AM Superstation," which consistently draws a paltry 0.3 share, with a laughable cume of 25,000 listeners. I think that Entercom would be more interested in acquiring 96.3 and 760 than Beasley, especially when you take into account WJR's relatively high payroll, sports broadcast contracts, and syndication fees. No way that Beasley would ever take on those liabilities, even if they bought out several contracts.

Detroit radio will indeed change in the future with this possibility of a Cumulus sale. WJR could become something totally different like religion or ethnic we will see.

WDVD/WJR- goes to Beasley. Format's stay the same, maybe 96.3 gets a new name. WJR drops Rush and gets a local show in that time slot.

WDRQ- goes to Entercom. Becomes a simulcast of 950 WWJ

OR

Entercom gets 760 and 96.3. EMF acquires 93.1, moves K-love to 93.1 and the WDKL calls. 102.7 becomes Air1 and the WDRQ calls move there.

I don’t see WJR going ethnic. They will stay talk. A simulcast on FM and a lineup change is very possible, especially if Salem bids for it,

Salem hasn't acquired any properties of note in a long time. Rumor has it that they even be willing to part with 105.1 WAVA in the D.C. area.

I wouldn't be looking to Salem as a buyer.

It’s also possible that Cumulus will sell them as a cluster to a slightly smaller group like Hubbard or Cox, Someone Who is not currently in the Detroit Market.

WJR is a cash cow for Cumulus, I don't see any scenario where they part with it in the near future.
They seem to be keeping the legacy AM's in NYC and LA as well.
My guess if there is a sale, it's to unload WDRQ.

I’m just wishing Cumulus would unload the Tri Cities and Flint market stations to a smaller radio group. Their incredibly tight corporate playlists drive me crazy with their repetition.

I'm pretty sure Cumulus won't unload WJR,because of the audience for its lineup of kookbergers .

Cox has not acquired any stations in years, in fact I believe they could be exiting the radio biz all together.

It's very possible The Cloud keeps WJR as a stand alone, spins off both DVD and DRQ. DVD IMO would like go to Beasely(or Entercom). Here's a Theory, DVD goes to Beasley . EMF gets 93.1, EMF spins 102.7 off to Crawford or Adell,

I got some bottles and cans in my car and garage. I'll make them an offer they can't refuse.

Would Bonneville or Lincoln Financial want to get into the Detroit media market on the radio side?

I'll pitch in a 30-gallon bag full of cans for your cause, but I want studio naming rights. I doubt it will take much. With that list of markets available, Detroit will likely be at the bottom of the list of sought after markets, unless Akron or Dayton is for sale.

You drive a hard bargain, TC. But I think we can work something out.
