Yet another jock leaves 105.1 the Bounce

Post by MWmetalhead » Wed Mar 20, 2019 8:13 pm

The revolving door at 105.1 the Bounce remains in full effect.

This time, Shay Shay exits.

For a station as successful as that one, it sure sees an ungodly amount of turnover in the on-air talent realm.

Often talent negotiates high contracts with a performance guarantee. When a station launches with a powerhouse staff, they zoom to the top, then management cuts the payroll banking that they won't lose listeners.

It's a game they have played for years.

It appears Tune Up Man is Shay Shay's replacement.

Nothing against him, but Shay Shay was familiar to a wide cross-section of the Metro Detroit audience. Tune Up Man is only familiar to diehard Urban-formatted station listeners.

Then again, perhaps I shouldn't be questioning the personnel moves current management has made. Since kicking Big Boy to the curb, 105.1's ratings (which were decent to start with) seem to have only gotten stronger.

Pretty true. Fortunately, most of us have other options.

So, the afternoon jock the station had hired from some tiny ass town in NW Alabama lasted a couple weeks(if that) and is long gone. (I'm glad he's gone; heard him twice and was very unimpressed.)

Now, comes word that some dude who programmed an AM daytime / FM translator combo in Pittsburgh - 100 WAMO - is taking over the shift.

Still no word on a permanent replacement for Shay Shay in middays; Tune Up Man has been covering that shift for the past several weeks.

There has GOT to be some dirt regarding the departure of Big Boy and Shay Shay. One day, Big Boy is doing morning drive. The next day, he's gone without a trace. Shay Shay sticks around for a month or two and then is tossed aside.

Shay Shay took a full time job as Athletic Director for the City of Detroit (I didn’t know such a position exsisted) apparently it’s something she always wanted to do. She is also a professor at Wayne State and teaches sports broadcasting.
Personally I liked her better than Suga Rae, who can’t seem to stick anywhere long.
Seems to me that new mgmt is successfully undoing everything Al Payne set up., all that’s left is Gello and Dinero! I actually like Gello better than Bigg..

I like Tune up man. Remember listening to him on 96.3 back in the day. Why not just bring back Man at large too lol.

Hear me out. 96.3 should go back to Old School rap and dance hits along with some new music. Play some new music that fits. Everything that is old is new again. If 105.1 opened the playlist, they would be destroying other stations. Yes, they had good ratings this book. To me the playlist is not that good. Same songs over and over again. You have Lisa Lisa on 96.3..it won't be like the fake Weelz. Love that MW. It's 96.3, they would destroy 105.1. Who Jamz, .96.3 Jams.

I agree that the repetition on 105.1 is bothersome, but there is not a ton of airworthy material as far as "throwback" hip-hop and R&B goes that can appeal to a broad coalition of listeners. Ratings wise, 105.1 is doing very well and is outperforming every other station with a similar format in the country.

As far as 96.3 goes, I will agree insofar as they would stand to benefit by playing more rhythmic-style, party songs. Something similar to what 94.9 in Cincinnati has done in the past. Current & recurrent Hot AC and CHR product is very weak at the moment. What 96.3 ought to do is go live & local from 5a to Midnight with plenty of listener interaction. When the station followed that formula, they briefly reached #1 in the market in ages 6+ (AQH share) and were consistently top five in Adults 25-54.
