WKNR 760

If WKNR was on 760 with 50kw Clear Channel would The Big 8 be that big in the Top 40 era?

I would think so, because AM 800 had the one thing people wanted and loved: GREAT CONTENT. Great music to play, great announcers, a highly popular format, and a signal that was very good for a non-clear-channel frequency.

Keener 13 also was in first place also for a while so if they had the 760 spot on the dial next to The Big 8 with a top 40 format they could have been fighting for #1 much longer than they did.

First, I think WJR would have had little incentive to enter into a four-way battle for the Top-40 market, especially considering the fact that many T40 listeners were literally children.

How fondly one remembered WKNR had a lot to do with where you lived. At night, their six-tower array with 5kw blew about 30KW ERP over Detroit's west side (hard to believe today, that in the 60s, it was where the white middle, and upper-middle, classes lived), but its night pattern was very narrow. On Detroit's far east side, and in Livonia, it was weak and buried under skywave signals.

I grew up on Detroit's East Side, and never listened to WXYT or WKNR. CKLW was king. If I didn't like the song on CKLW, my alternatives were CHYR or WJLB (half of the songs on WJLB were on CK too).

WKNR came in loud and clear in Farmington Township 24/7 back in the 60’s. Top 40 (31) hits and great on air personalities. In the fall of 63 when from basically nothing in the ratings to #1 in 91 days. Put that on 760’s 50K clear and the legend would be even greater.

In a sense, something like WKNR 760 did happen. CKLW adopted the Boss format, which had a lot in common with WKNR's, and CKLW even hired away some of KNR's air talent (I believe this was in 1965 or 1966).
CKLW had the strongest signal throughout the eastern half of the market (except within a mile of WJLB and WBRB), and strong enough in Oakland and western Wayne (few people had moved to Livingston county yet).
