Jason Dixon Exits ‘Detroit Sports 105.1.’

Post by LouPerry » Wed Feb 11, 2015 8:24 am

From Talkers:

After a year and a half as the only program director WMCG, Detroit has known since flipping to sports in August of 2013, Jason Dixon announces he’s resigned from the station effective immediately. Greater Media’s “Detroit Sports 105.1” debuted 16 months ago to challenge the sports talk dominance of CBS RADIO’s crosstown WXYT-FM. Dixon tells TALKERS magazine he’s available for new opportunities and can be reached at: 919-999-6096 or via email at

Here is a summary of Dixon's "accomplishments: "
--Doing next to nothing to fix the dreadful afternoon show on his station
--Trying in vain to stage a "green out" at Ford Field for the Bills / Jets game (how did that work out?)
--Hiring ZERO major players away from 97.1 or other successful large market sports radio outlets
--Landing the Pistons (only because 97.1 no longer wanted them)
--Achieving the lowest ratings of any commercial FM station in the market (save for 103.5 WMUZ, which is a fringe station by design)

I do have to say this: given the shit pile that constitutes 105.1's programming, a 1.4 share isn't horrible. The old 97.1 FM Talk was in similar territory for a few years.

Who came up with the corny-as-hell "It's like a sports bar in your car!" imaging statement that 105.1 is now using? How cheesy. WTF is that even supposed to mean? Is this the handiwork of their new consultant? :lol

Now that he is gone, maybe someone will come in and actually do something. They can start with the dumpster fire afternoon show. Maybe move Dery to 2-6 and have Ryan and Rico handle 10-2? I refuse to listen to that nuclear waste spewing from 97.1. I suppose podcasts may be my future...

I think both PDs were on a fool's errand in that job. Between Buzz, and Steve Chessare, I seriously doubt they were given much latitude to do anything.

They had more freedom than you'd think

OK - so was Dixon forced to run Mike & Mike in A.M. Drive (a show everyone knew would be a massive ratings flop in this market) and a non-sports oriented show in PM Drive on a station branding itself "as Detroit Sports 105.1" ?

If the answer is "yes," he had nowhere nearly enough freedom.

Seems to me 75% of the programming was either Detroit-centric with minimal sports content, or sports-centric with a focus on national teams as opposed to local.

Drew in morning drive, followed by local sports (or local general talk) shows in middays, afternoons & early evenings would've been the way to go.

Whomever chose or supported the initial programming formula is a fucking moron. (Hence, why Steve Chessare now works in a market that generates maybe 10% the advertising revenue Detroit does.)

Drew did not want to do AM drive.

Drew would sound good on AM Radio that's where he should be.

Drew did not want to do AM drive.
In that case. 105.1 should've either went general talk instead of sports talk or should've never put Drew on the air in a prominent daypart (no pun intended!) like afternoon drive.

I don't believe you answered my earlier question, btw.
Drew would sound good on AM Radio that's where he should be.
When Drew & Mike were cancelled from WRIF, I was openly advocating for 760 WJR to hire Drew Lane for late mornings or (preferably) PM drive. I think it would've been a great fit.

His podcast is so successful - and he has so much freedom - he'd be nuts to put all his eggs in the terrestrial radio basket at this point.

Putting Drew on WJR would be similar to what WLS did by putting Mancow on in morning drive. Don't think that Detroit PDs have that kind of "out of box" thinking.
