It seems the number of outages reported on DTE's app and web site may not be all that accurate:
https://www.clickondetroit.com/weather/ ... dashboard/

DTE is "officially" reporting about 50,000 or 55,000 outages right now, but poweroutage.us is reporting about 104,000 outages within DTE's territory.

The poweroutage place gets it's outage information from DTE. This could be a disconnect or an update issue between DTE and both poweroutage.us and Kubra, who handles the outage map and customer communications for DTE.

At least I hope so. The Westland images I posted earlier also make me wonder if there isn't a h-u-g-e database problem in DTE records, where they don't accurately place the electric meter within their distribution network. That would explain the overlapping outage areas. More importantly though, it would also be very confusing to locate and identify the common point for many individual outages, which could help crews locate the actual problem quickly.

They used to have to rely on customer-reported information but with all the "smart" meters out there, the outage information should be updated automatically. Within an hour or so they should have a VERY accurate picture on who's still in service or who is without power.

When my power goes out, Consumers calls me to let me know when to expect it back on, often when I'm not even in the state.

The new mapping system actually overcounted during the last storm and undercounted this one it seems.
