Just now, was flipping channels and spotted this story from fox17 playing on WXYZ/7 4:00p newscast.

Are both stations Scripps or was this a freelance segment on pumpkins?

Both are Scripps and that happens semi-regularly now.

Fox17 has a lot stories from WXYZ almost daily I haven't seen a lot of former Fox17 reporter Darren Cunningham reports I see former Wood TV weekend anchor/reporter Whitney from time to time been a few months since I have seen a report from her. I know weekday morning anchor from Fox17 was just hired as a reporter for WXYZ.

Was just weird to see a cross “network” story.
If they’re both Scripps then that makes sense… don’t watch much 7 news anyways unless that’s all that’s on.

WXYZ would show up the KMGH in Denver (both Scripps).
WXYZ had reporters covering the Black Forest wildfires for KMGH.

They are Scripps stations, just like WXYZ stories show up on FOX 47 in Lansing.

ABC 12 in Flint has the same owners as the Weather Channel, and some of the WC stories are aired on 12.

As the sharing of resources between nearby stations continues with the same ownership, it makes me wonder if channel number references eventually goes away and more generic branding comes along like you see when there is two stations sharing resources in-market (i.e. Mid-Michigan Now). Could there be “Nexstar Michigan” or “NewsNation Michigan”?
