AM 680?
AM 680?
While driving down Michigan Ave. in Inkster this morning I hit scan on my radio and it stopped at AM 680 which was playing Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding. After the song was over at 8 AM a voice said "we now ask you to change your station", then static. Was it a pirate station or something?
Thanks
Thanks

WNZK has a unique dual-frequency license. They operate on 690 Khz daytime and 680 KHz nighttime. Neither frequency can be used full-time because of different stations on the two frequencies that have to be protected.

In particular, you were listening to the "motown and a Cup-Of-Joe Morning Show", hosted by Crystal Mayo (spelling?).
It's my usual morning commute listening, interspersed with WWJ to check the traffic.
It's best on Wednesday (Open request line) and Thursday (Oldies from several decades).
On Friday, it tends to be EP records, so I will usually listen to WSM or try to DX until I get into Detroit Proper, when I can catch a song or two on CKWW.
Her show ends at 8:00 AM. WNZK is a brokered station. People rent time on it. Much of the programming is in languages other that English, often Arabic (since it has an excellent signal in Dearborn day and night).
Their day pattern on 690 beams NNW and thus has a mediocre signal in Macomb County, while their night pattern on 680 booms into the eastern suburbs but becomes weak in the western suburbs.
The frequency change can be seen on YouTube.

WNZK needs to give Crystal the entire morning show 6-10 time slot, It would be good for Miss Mayo and WNZK, They need to market her show, They could get a small amount of ad revenue. Crystal is a musically talented personality. And Innate you have brought Crystal up before, So we’re on the right track in saying this is a decent program and a talented individual.

I-75 downriver has tons of digital billboards. An advantage of digital billboards is that she could buy display time only in the morning drive weekdays when the show is on.
Re: AM 680?
This is true, But this Girl needs more than just 2 hours a day for her product, 6-10 in the morning would be great that’s the kind of radio we need in this town, It in all honesty is true Detroit Radio just like it used be.
Re: AM 680?
Thanks for the info! Very cool that these little stations still exist.

Happy 68th birthday to Hon. J.C. Patterson Collegiate Institute (high school) buddy Fred Rivait .
When I hear Lee Michaels' (born Michael Lee Olson,Nov.24,1945 in Los Angeles ) "Do You Know What I Mean?" ,I think of Louis Norman "Bobo," "Buck" Newsom (1907-1962 ),who had a 211-222 record in an extraordinarily peripatetic career stretching from 1929 to 1953,meaning Newsom could have theoretically faced Balitmore-born MLB Hall-Of-Famers Babe Ruth and Al Kaline, but Bobo (his preferred nickname, because he called everyone "Bobo") faced neither man. I was about 18 when "Do You Know What I Mean" hit,and it's always been one of my faves .

What do any of those random facts have to do with AM 680?

Sima Birach doesn’t “give” time slots away. It’s pay to play. He doesn’t provide any marketing of programming or station. Marketing of any type is the choice of the purchaser of the air time. They pay for it.Oldies 84 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 7:55 pmWNZK needs to give Crystal the entire morning show 6-10 time slot, It would be good for Miss Mayo and WNZK, They need to market her show, They could get a small amount of ad revenue. Re: AM 680?
Oldies 84,the ninety-year-old Bob Allison still has a radio gig . I remember "Friendly" Bob Allison from his WWJ days in the mid-60's. I'd love to talk to him about his opinion of today's radio industry,as I'm sure ol' Bobby has seen such in his 65 or so years on the air.
Re: AM 680?
Would this be the "Bowling for dollars" Bob Allison?
I remember watching as a kid when the bowler hit left of the head pin the call was "Brooklyn, Brooklyn, Bang!"

Maybe someone at Mix 92.3 or Kiss FM 105.9 or Even Hot 107.5 WGPR should look this Crystal Mayo up and perhaps give her a try for a Sunday Morning Retro Show, I think she’s worth it.Art Van Damme wrote: ↑Fri Feb 01, 2019 10:42 amSima Birach doesn’t “give” time slots away.
