I stopped by at the Denny's near the airport and looked up Big Al Avila. Al informed me he still considers the Justin Verlander trade his crowning achievement. That certainly speaks volume...............

Tony Paul at the Detroit News tried to resurrect Al's reputation in an article a few days ago.

Al once again showed the humility that helped him segue smoothly from GM of the Tigers to his current position:
"I've asked Avila, 66, for multiple interviews, including recently. I wanted to talk about all the players he drafted who are doing big things now. But Avila politely declined, which I understood. He doesn't want to be a story when his time has passed. But he also acknowledged that he's enjoying watching these Tigers make this magical run. He's followed the Tigers closely since the day he was fired. He's been a fan since the day he was fired."

Jake Rogers knocks in the first run of the wild-card series. Verlander off the Astros’ roster. Ron was a prophet.

Speaking of Jake, that mustache would make a nice push broom.

Just heard Kurt on 97.1 giving Avila credit for this team!
Good to know he's OK.

Because the world revolved around him, Ron’s grievance about Colangelo & being “banned” from Comerica would still be front & center. Once past that, though, he would’ve credited Al Avila for the team’s success, still critical of Scott Harris for not having any contact with Lance Parrish.

Luis Tiant, whose "real" age was long a subject of Ron's concern, has died at the age of "83."

With the Pacers in town tonight-Haliburton!
Re: Ron Cameron
First the death of Luis Tiant, & now, two weeks later, the death of Fernando Valenzuela. Ron would've been so preoccupied with talking about their "real" ages, he'd have precious little time this heated presidential election season to offer his incisive take on the "Electrical" College.
