Are weather balloons still in use? They used to be a common sight. Sometimes mistaken for UFOs.

Haven't seen one for a long time. Probably replaced by satellites.

Weather balloons are in daily use. The Detroit/Pontiac NWS station in White Lake, MI, along with others across the country, launches balloons twice daily. They are used to gather, among other data, measurements of winds aloft, temperature gradients and barometric pressure at different altitudes. Max altitude can be be up to 100,000 ft. (30km). These readings are combined with those from the hundreds of similar sounding balloons to generate the complex maps and provide basis for forecasts.
