There are some things you can only smack down offline, by booting off a thumb drive w/a program designed to run independently of a sick OS or profile in eradicating nasties. Even these - when successful - may leave things in a less than optimal / desirable state.

Since you've got a family tech lifeline, you may want to invite your sons in IT to drop their Blackberries & swing by for a New Years' CC & computer OS re-install (and backup restore (if you have one)).
