When asked who would be able to receive enough votes to replace McCarthy, Gaetz also mentioned House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), the No. 2 Republican in the chamber whom House Republicans had been rumored to favor in January if McCarthy failed to win the speakership—though Scalise is undergoing cancer treatment following a multiple myeloma diagnosis in August and said this week he is “committed to continuing to work with [McCarthy].”

The Democrats will nominate the minority leader for the speaker job. It's the sensible choice...
House Democrats plan to nominate Hakeem Jeffries, Democrat of New York and the minority leader, to the speakership. His ascent is extremely unlikely since Republicans control the majority.

But it is not clear who, if anyone, in the House G.O.P. can earn the majority of votes needed to win a speaker’s race. And Mr. McCarthy said on Tuesday that he would not run for speaker again, according to lawmakers who attended a closed-door meeting underneath the Capitol.

Steve Scalise is running for the speakership and so is Jim Jordan. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, a name unfamiliar to me, may also run.

Among those choices, I definitely like Scalise most.
