Newsom has a big decision. He basically promised to appoint a black woman, which is Lee, after he put Padilla in Kamalas seat. But Pelosi wants Schiff to get the seat. If Gavin appoints Lee, she would have a head up in next years election being the incumbent.
Do you think appointing Schiff to Feinstien's seat, and then appointing Lee to Schiff's seat, would placate everyone?
Lee is already in Congress.

Newsom is really in a lose-lose situation here. My guess is he picks the CA. Secretary of State, a black woman named Weber to serve.

Nope.
Do you think Newsom should consider Pelosi still influential enough to kowtow to? Or because she's exiting stage left, can he say:
"I appreciate your opinion but ... ".

Appointing a house member to another house seat wouldn’t work. Pelosi is running again too so that’s out. Lee has little chance in a general against Schiff too…

So how exactly is appointing somebody on the basis of sex and skin color not sexist and racist?

Why did I think Pelosi has chosen not to seek reelection? Sorry about that. Negate anything I was asking.

Your point is somewhat valid. Newsom should not have made the statement in the first place.

However, black women make up something like 13-14% of the. US population. There currently is not a black woman in the senate. Isn't that sexist and racist?

13.6% of the population is black. That makes about 7% of it black women. So Newsom has just disqualified 93% of the population on the basis of skin color or sex. That's indefensible any way you look at it.

As to the fact that there aren't any black women in the Senate, considering that the vast majority of black people are Democrats, I'd say that's largely the fault of Democrat voters. What Newsom (and Biden with his SCOTUS pick) are doing is basically affirmative action. You can't fix racial disparities with reverse racism.

I disagree. The US political system is a complete clusterfuck. It's a good ol' boys club, and as a result, we're gonna be stuck with Biden or Trump for 4 more years, unless Biden dies or Trump ends the world in their term. Maybe things would be better if government was more representative.

That's the entire USA, no? To be a senator, you must reside in the state you represent. In California, blacks (non-mixed race) make up 6.5%. Mixed race (total) is 4.3%. So you could say it's approximately 7.5%. Black women would make up ~3.75%...

Wonder if this was because the last time someone promised to pick a Black female for political office it turned out so spectacularly? :barf

But I am heartened to see that there are a few liberals out there that still know what a woman is.
New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

Gavin has said he will not appoint someone running for the seat in 2024. Does not want gave a leg up to anyone.
