A truly dystopian smaller major city, devastated by new irrational policies.

The post-COVID blight on Dort Highway is a paradise compared to Portland.

After buying a couple of 67.5 volt batteries for an old field strength meter at Shand's circa 1990, and being yelled at by the patrons in the Adult Entertainment District next door, I haven't been on that part of Dort Hwy. Never lived on that side of town, so I never was there much.

Yep, the larger cities in Michigan are looking pretty good now compared to the West Coast. Part of it is that after 1967 and no full recovery ever, they knew not to riot. Sheriff Swanson and Mayor Neeley helped a lot with that.

Too many politicians on all sides regard their constituents as deplorable. They would like it if we all lived in those little boxes shown in Portland, like the WWII internment camps, walked, bicycled, and took public transportation, keeping the deplorables close to home, so they don't see how politicians live and what they do. Don't ever let them get close enough to find a discarded Mac or diary. You can only "deny deny deny" for so long.

The blight on Dort Hwy was present well before Covid.

Hell, Pearson road near the i-75 corridor isn't looking too hot these days either. I mean how many times have you heard of Meijer closing and bulldozing a store?

New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

Pierson Rd. and I-75 have been bad for 50 years or more. They probably thought that Flushing would eventually expand and envelop that area. Grand Blanc and Davison aren't that bad, and the Fenton, Mundy, Tyrone corridor along US 23 are pretty good. Meijer is building further out.

Excellent article. Pictures speak louder than words.

I have some family in Portland, and yes, homelessness and drug use are both gigantic issues. Each was already bad twenty years ago, and in recent years, each has exploded to epic proportions.

There are a lot of peculiar people who live in that part of the country.

Sure if you ignore the fact that Oregon City, the town they kept referencing, is a good 15 miles from where the photos (which appear to be quite dated) were allegedly taken. Not so different than the hack pieces the fine citizens of Michigan were crying about when all the "ruins porn" of Detroit started showing up online. Gotta love those British tabloids. Right up there with Batboy...

Big city violence is a myth when you consider crime per capita.

The Saginaw News and m live had a statewide study a few years ago of all geographical census entities. You could have 60 murders a year in a bigger city, and just outside those cities, cities and townships in the first tier had just one or zero murders, usually zero. Second tier out cities and townships-ZERO.

The Trump Administration (largely responsible for the lack of progress in 2020 incities like Seattle and Portland) obstructed voucher housing funds via HUD. That block causes deviation like this.

Who was the HHS secretary?

Several months old and aired during sweeps. Draw your own conclusion.

He DID draw his own conclusion. It just happens to be different from yours.

And btw - where were you when the media was running 4-year old photos of children in cages (from 2014) and attributing them to Trump in 2018? I seem to recall you having a lot of problems with Trump's border policy, but I don't seem to recall you having a problem with those 4-year-old photos.

I agree. However...

It's much worse now. Almost "third world country" worse.

There may be hope yet. Went by there a couple weeks ago and looks like somebody purchased the old contos bar and it's putting a fair amount of money into it.
