Some GOOD news - Covid now less deadly than the flu
Some GOOD news - Covid now less deadly than the flu
Covid (based on reported deaths and the IHME estimated case totals)
1.51% Mortailty - First Wave (Spring 2020)
0.65% Mortality - Second Wave (Dec/Jan 2021)
0.42% Mortality - Delta Wave (Sept 2021)
0.07% Mortality - Omicron (Jan 2022)
0.05% Mortality - Omicron BA.2 (Current)
Flu (based on CDC estimates)
0.10% Mortality - 2015-2016 Season
0.13% Mortality - 2016-2017 Season
0.14% Mortality - 2017-2018 Season
0.09% Mortality - 2018-2019 Season
0.06% Mortality - 2019-2020 Season
Average - 0.10%

I'd say Omicron was the best thing that could possibly have happened. Delta was nearly 4x less deadly than the original outbreak, and the first Omicron wave was 6x less deadly than Delta. Now if you get Covid, statistically speaking, you're 30x less likely to die from it than if you had gotten it in early-mid 2020.
Also interesting to note that currently, Omicron is only half as deadly as the seasonal flu on a per-case basis. I know it is more contagious, but this is still great news.
I think this not only calls for a celebration, but also calls for every single Covid restriction that still exists around the country to be 100% lifted.

Thank God and science for the vaccines.

Re: Some GOOD news - Covid now less deadly than the flu
This was the hope when the science community rushed to develop a vaccine. Too bad there are so many ignorant people in the US who will have life long health impacts or are dead.

Re: Some GOOD news - Covid now less deadly than the flu
I would add to that list the natural evolution of the virus (ie, variants) as well as the building up of natural immunity among the population.
It is important to note that we had no vaccine between the first 2 waves yet the mortality rate fell by 2.5x. That was largely attributable to science (namely, better knowledge on how to treat Covid patients).
The vaccine no doubt played a role in reducing mortality rates for the Delta wave, especially among the elderly.
Virus mutation appears to be the most significant factor during the Omicron waves, as 65% of the population was fully vaccinated even before-hand; that number has only climbed to 78%, yet deaths are down 6-8x. Natural immunity is also starting to play a role as people who get re-infected generally have far fewer complications than during their primary infection.
But WHATEVER THE REASONS, the flu is now more of a threat than Covid.

I thank bmw for the insightful data and completely agree that this is good news.
We are clearly out of the pandemic phase at this point.

You’re welcome.

Those of us who got the shots are a large part of the reason why the disease did not spread farther and even more systemically, especially before omicron. We contributed to the lessening of mortality.

I generally agree that increased vaccination would have been better, but your response seemed to have a certain level of arrogance.MotorCityRadioFreak wrote: ↑Mon Jun 20, 2022 5:48 amThose of us who got the shots are a large part of the reason why the disease did not spread farther and even more systemically, especially before omicron. As if BMW and the other people in this forum aren't arrogant...Matt wrote: ↑Mon Jun 20, 2022 6:50 amI generally agree that increased vaccination would have been better, but your response seemed to have a certain level of arrogance.MotorCityRadioFreak wrote: ↑Mon Jun 20, 2022 5:48 amThose of us who got the shots are a large part of the reason why the disease did not spread farther and even more systemically, especially before omicron.
