I agree with you.
Everyone I talk to wonders why impeach AFTER he leaves office.
He’s already been impeached. The house did that before he left office. This is the trial to see if he gets convicted or not. These are two different steps in the process.

Easy way to remember:
The house impeaches and the senate convicts. Whether they convict or not, if there is a trial then it means there has already been an impeachment.
