Every once in a while a mentally ill person rises to some lofty position. Why? Because those around them excuse their words and behaviors as quirky, big personalities, character flaws, dangerous practical jokers, devilishly charming, weirdos, loners, attention seekers, dare devils, and any and all euphemisms for their consistent words and behaviors that are highly disruptive, dangerously risky, non-sensical, harming, self-harming, unethically manipulative, etc.

Just as with a so-called “functioning alcoholic”.

Note - instead of plain “alcoholic” - the illness of addiction - in this case to alcohol - the illness is qualified with a more positive description - “functioning.” In reality however it’s simply another euphemism to bypass life threatening illness and make it something less negative.

So - whether it’s Trump, this new congresswoman, etc. there are persons suffering from mental illnesses who go undiagnosed - constantly excused by those around them - who are able to rise to lofty positions where their symptoms can do major damage to others.
