The goal was to contain Iran which the deal did and in exchange we had to give them some things in return including settling up on the debts we owed them as well as debts they owed us. Trump tore that up in a fit of pique despite the verification process working and finding Iran complying. They are rather rightly angry and not keen on trusting us again and it wasn’t all that easy to get them to agree to this deal. Trump blew it yet again.
