The unions in the US first powered up due to industry/ownership greed for money - over any concern for the well-being of employees. Workers were killed or injured or sickened in dangerous working conditions. They were thought of as chattel - disrespected by bosses, and cheated by company systems designed to keep employees down. Plus - abhorrent child labor was rampant.
There was too much injustice for too long. Anger boiled over into the streets. Work became a war against unsafe conditions and unfair wages.
Through years of bloody battles - employees tipped the balance of power. By organizing into unions - they finally attained some human respect - and workplace dignity and justice.
The union/management contest for power, respect, and justice has since carried on. It’s a delicate negotiation between employees and ownership that sustains both sides when a fair balance is struck. If union bosses get greedy and/or corrupted -forgetting the foundational reasons for their existence - then the unions eventually lose their power and are busted.
However - when they lose their influence and membership - the same type of abuses that caused unionization in the first place -slowly start to appear again.
Get ready for a resurgence in union creation, and in union membership. Why? Because as long as ownership is tempted to place profits over people - the urgency to band together in a union will swell and succeed.
