I’m surprised this horrible accident hasn’t happened more often. Maybe it has but was not revealed.
It’s difficult to grip anything wet and slippery - as those of us who fish can attest. Especially a moving newborn baby.
One answer is deeper padding on surfaces over which infants are handled. And wheeling them on those padded, high sided surfaces instead of dangling them over the open floor and other hard surfaces with no “safety net” (so to speak) in between.

There are 3.8 million births a year in the US. Sometimes unfortunate things happen.
