Insomnia & the Election: An Open Letter to my Forum Friends

Post by Mega Hertz » Sat May 07, 2016 11:00 am

Happy Saturday morning, fellow Buzzboarders.

As I find that I probably speak with all of you (albeit anonymously behind a keyboard) more than anyone else, I sort of consider you a quasi "support group". We all chat about the same things and wind up having many-a spirited debate. Lately, I'm having a bit of an issue and, given that we're all pretty open about personal experiences, I want to lay down a serious issue I'm having, and see if any of you have any advice.

With all this talk about the election and the candidates and the constant barrage of the 24 hour news cycle, I'm finding the whole thing troubling and am actually losing sleep over the whole thing. Granted, I have other stressors in my life, as we all do, those are in my hands and are things I have some degree of control over. However, the worry about the direction of our country and the two presumtuive individuals who may be the leader of it is troubling and causing me great worry. I'm not trying to come off like GG, who "can't sleep" nightly because of the fear that President Obama is going to come knocking at my door to confiscate my weapons and contents of my wallet. The thought of either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton setting forth their ideas and views and running this country is causing my brain to overload. I fear that there are some very dark times ahead. Great unrest. Not much to look forward to. I don't know if this is even normal, or if any one else here in the forum has any kind of problem like this. I refuse to take any kind of sleep aid, and as far as I'm concerned, any form of narcotic is out of the question (I had a prescription for Xanax for anxiety a couple of years back...was NOT a fan and told my doctor as much). I don't expect everybody here to take this post seriously, and I'm sure there's going to be a couple of clowns that will make a joke out of it. And in order to avoid hearing about the election or the candidates themselves, I would really have to cut quite a bit out of my life...the news, in all forms (CNN, Fox, MSNBC, papers, WWJ, WJR, etc.), many social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. At work, the TV sets are always set on CNN or some news channel. I probably shouldn't visit the Pol Pot much either, but I consider you many of my cyber-buds (Bryce in general is someone I wouldn't mind having a beer with), so I like to pop in and see what's up. So, in essence, I'm not really sure what to do about this, there really isn't much I can do as the people have apparently spoken and it looks like those are the choices. I could really use a solid 6-7 straight hours of shut eye, before lack of sleep causes me to start making poor decisions or start screwing up at work. I can't afford to lose my job...Obama is almost out of office and I won't be able to get my free handouts much longer! :razz

I can't really help him either... Don't watch the news I guess... See a shrink for losing sleep over that which you cannot control... I got nothing else...

Personally I think the "machine" that is the United States of America is bigger than any president. The republicans "survived" Jimmy Carter and the democrat's "survived" Ronald Regan. We the people will survive the next president...except of course the 2.6 million people who die every year in America. Those folks will die whether Trump or Clinton is in office.

I will cast my ballot in November and without a doubt will write in "none of the above" under president. Its truly not worth losing sleep over. No matter who the president is life goes on...till it stops which happens sooner or later to all of us.

Ah, Lester, uh...that was meant to be sarcastic, hence the tongue sticking out. It's been eight years, but I had grown tired of the "Obama is gonna take half of mine and give to those that refuse to work" talk by mid 2010.

I'm still searching for the "Socialism Deduction" and "Thanks for working to support non-white people who choose not to seek employment" deductions on my paycheck. I still get my full paycheck every week, so I'm not sure when half of my stuff is supposed to start getting taken away from me...

I think it's more of the doom and gloom aspect of it. I just don't see a bright future or many good times ahead of us. I actually fear what may be happening in the future.

Do you think this is the first time in US History that's been said? No not even close...

Nor am I suggesting it IS the first time. But it's the first time I've ever had this problem. And the fact it gets pounded and burned into your brain, especially with the character issues and lack of trust in either person, just makes me feel very uneasy.

Right now, I'm enjoying the Blues v. Stars on NBC. Nothing like some playoff hockey on a day off. And a perfect day to lay around to boot! It's an effort to try to escape the incessant barrage of coverage. It doesn't help that a person I have staying here at the house insists on having national and local news on ALL the time. I figure if I can escape it for a little while everything will be fine.

Just take a step back and laugh a little... 90% of that "coverage" is bullshit too...

The thing I ponder the most about is the direction the Supreme Court may take the country. The next president may very well have the opportunity to seat up to 7 justices in the next 8 years. A heavily conservative or liberal court that's going to be making decisions for the rest of our lifetimes.

Everything you all say about life goes on and the republic will survive, I'll agree with. But the top court seems to be making the final decision on more and more things. Think how often they have heard a case that made you wonder "Why is that all the way to the Supreme Court?". Whenever our next president has an agenda, he or she is going to just throw the ball to their home team on the bench to make it law.

First off, if I have been the cause of your insomnia, I apologize.

Second, there is only so much you can do - the weight is not entirely on your shoulders, but The fact you concerned means are considerate person...and that is good thing.

Here is link that is of great comfort to me:

Also you are not alone - there has been a flood of anxiety related to the elections:

Maybe try some exercise - I just went on my second bike ride today.

And pray for our country...

Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!

The Supreme court can certainly raise some concerns...... but....... 9-0 decisions are by far the most common votes. But we only pay attention to a couple hot button issues every session that end up 5-4.

If you get down to Ohio, bring back a couple cases of Yuengling in cans and I'll buy!!! Might even throw some ribs in the smoker for the occasion.

New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.
