A third party

Post by Circle Seven » Sun Apr 03, 2016 4:07 pm

Just out of curiosity, what are the logistics involved in someone running as a third party candidate or independent?
As an example, if Sanders loses the nomination, and wants to run for president anyway.
Or if someone like Romney decides to go third party to "Save the Republic" from Trump.
I'm not so much interested in the chances of someone winning, as much as just what would the process be for some big name, frustrated by the nominations handed out by the two big parties, deciding to run for president.

To get on the ballot in all 50 states you have to file by each states filing deadline with whatever number of signatures are required by that state. The first deadline comes up in early May...

To use it as a derail of sorts (think Trump is denied the nomination and decides to punish the Republican party) you could jump into collecting signatures after the convention in July and then get on the ballot in a few states and possibly split the vote that way...
