Paul Krugman

Many people are reacting to the rise of Trumpism and nativist movements in Europe by reading history — specifically, the history of the 1930s. And they are right to do so. It takes willful blindness not to see the parallels between the rise of fascism and our current political nightmare.

But the ’30s isn’t the only era with lessons to teach us. Lately I’ve been reading a lot about the ancient world. Initially, I have to admit, I was doing it for entertainment and as a refuge from news that gets worse with each passing day. But I couldn’t help noticing the contemporary resonances of some Roman history — specifically, the tale of how the Roman Republic fell.

Here’s what I learned: Republican institutions don’t protect against tyranny when powerful people start defying political norms. And tyranny, when it comes, can flourish even while maintaining a republican facade.

On the first point: Roman politics involved fierce competition among ambitious men. But for centuries that competition was constrained by some seemingly unbreakable rules. Here’s what Adrian Goldsworthy’s “In the Name of Rome” says: “However important it was for an individual to win fame and add to his and his family’s reputation, this should always be subordinated to the good of the Republic … no disappointed Roman politician sought the aid of a foreign power.”

ALWAYS with the Hitler comparison. You really need to expand your playbook. Aren't you headed to France anyway?

Krugman is a certified piece of shit and a partisan hack.
It's the easiest one and closest to make in this particular situation...

The current occupant is an emasculated version of Jimmy Carter, only less successful. :lol
Voting for Trump is dumber than playing Russian Roulette with fully loaded chambers.

All forms of socialism (progressivism) eschew individual liberty and property rights for the "collective good." THAT is tyranny.
New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

College campuses honestly aren't that bad.. the right gets butt hurt because it largely didn't go get an education and had all its jobs automated apparently...

The people that go to college and get a bullshit degree in humanities or social sciences are insufferable. You won't see that shit going on at any B-School nor likely any Engineering School. The humanities losers are the ones that are running up six figure debt in the hopes of getting a $30,000/year job.

Indeed, but if you think they are insufferable then why bother with them?

I'm so sick of liberals claiming those on the right are uneducated. Give me a break. Just another fake liberal narrative. Another reason why I left the Democratic Party. Here's some facts from the Pew Center.

"The voters Clinton really lost—the ones she was targeting and relying on for victory—were college-educated whites. Most polling suggested she would win these voters, but she didn’t, according to exit polls: White men went 63 percent for Trump versus 31 percent for Clinton, and white women went 53-43 percent. Among college-educated whites, only 39 percent of men and 51 percent of women voted for Clinton."

I'm still not convinced either of these individuals is going to be good for our country. I will say this much, though.

A guy, with limited intellect, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, is going to be our president. When has THAT ever failed us before?

However, unlike those that gloat because their team won....instead of trashing the opposition in lieu of naming the good things about "my" candidate, and those who, in 2012, trashed President Obama, while anyone that did the same ten years earlier was accused of not loving America and was welcome to leave the country at any time, I will say this:

Our country, America, land that I love, has elected its new CIC, and I will take the high road and hope he treats the land that many died to defend with grace, dignity and honor.

Amen :8)

I don't buy the argument that Trump has limited intellect. People confuse public speaking ability with intellect. People also confuse Liberal Arts and Social Science, particularly Ivy League, degrees with Technical and Hard Science degrees. They vote very differently.

You don't buy the argument because you likely lack the capacity to understand intellect.

I have significant reservations about Donald Trump - mainly that his conservatism is manufactured to get elected.

Ultimately I could not vote for him.

The only quality that we both share is annoyance for big government red tape.
Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!

Trump knows exactly what he's doing. He got himself elected after all. He is a master marketer. He knows what to say, when to say it and who to say it to. I will give him that. He is much like Bill Clinton in the regard that he could sell anyone a '73 Pinto with a leaky gas tank and get top dollar.

Agreed. I see him as a populist who will do whatever it takes to bolster his own image and promote his "brand". Some of the ardent conservatives who supported him may find themselves shaking their heads down the road. The political pendulum in this country has a tendency to swing back and forth. I suspect Mr. Trump will keep a very close eye on that pendulum and follow it accordingly.
