SAN FRANCISCO – Fix global warming or cook dinner on a gas stove?
That’s the choice for people in 13 cities and one county in California that have enacted new zoning codes encouraging or requiring all-electric new construction.
The codes, most of them passed since June, are meant to keep builders from running natural gas lines to new homes and apartments, with an eye toward creating fewer legacy gas hookups as the nation shifts to carbon-neutral energy sources.
For proponents, it's a change that must be made to fight climate change. For natural gas companies, it's a threat to their existence. And for some cooks who love to prepare food with flame, it's an unthinkable loss.
Acceptable registrations in the queue through June 3 at 5:00p ET have now been activated. Enjoy! -M.W.

There are plenty of natural gas-fired power plants out there. In fact, they are now more common than coal-fired power plants and that trend will only grow stronger in coming years.
So, guess what? If you are using electricity from the power company, there's a darn good chance that NATURAL GAS is what is making that electricity consumption possible!

What if you want to have natural-gas powered generator, just in case you have of one those pesky preemptive power outages?
Oh snap! We didn't think of that....

Re: Can California just secede and become its own country already?
California is already well on the way to being a Third World Country. People living and depositing their waste in the streets. Power failures, forest fires they can't control, earthquakes and such are common. The question is, other than the weather, what do they really have going for them?
Wait till they tell them that life is Carbon based in most of the universe. And Silicon based life forms are pure Science Fiction. Without Carbon, there is no life. Even the "elites" are Carbon heavy. Humans are 18.5% Carbon by weight, second only to Oxygen. So if they outlaw Carbon, there is no life.
Look at the solar cell field it took to power WBNO Bryan, OH, a 500 watt radio station.

Great assessment Ben, it's the fifth largest economy on the planet. Pedal your talk show science elsewhere.

Re: Can California just secede and become its own country already?
California is massive compared to other states - with every kind of topography - the enchanting Redwood forests, the snowy Sierra Nevada mountains, the scenic Pacific Ocean coastline, the beautiful desert lands, the fertile valley farm fields and orange groves, every kind of orchard, the northern California wine country vineyards, and spectacular national parks.
There are many deep-rooted communities contributing their own stories to California’s history and culture - native American, Mexican American, African American, Asian American, European American (especially Spanish). People came to settle the wild west, build the railroads, construct Catholic missions, or try their luck in The Gold Rush, build military ships and planes, and build endless neighborhoods of middle class houses.
They still come to get a job in the movie industry, in agra business, The Silicon Valley, and within the military/industrial complex. California also has many fine universities, observatories, hospitals, and labs, where a belief in science fosters innovation and futuristic vision.
All in all it’s quite a spectacular state! With the fifth largest economy in the entire world.
Natural Disasters? Tragedies? Accidents? Mistakes? Yes.
Like all other places where people live, love, and learn.
But - in general - Californians are good-hearted people. Hard working. Grateful for their state. Welcoming. And thinking of solutions to problems that hurt the planet and all humanity.
In answer to the ignorant question: “What do they really have going for them?” The answer is: A lot!

Even if California wanted to secede (i'm not sure more than 10% even do...), the Supreme Court would smack it down and say "LOLNO you can't leave. we're in this great union together, so let's work together to make things better"

Re: Can California just secede and become its own country already?
Within California there’s always been talk in Sacramento (state legislature) of California splitting into two states with the dividing line - running east to west - somewhere around San Francisco. There have often been two “camps” - southern California and northern California. There have traditionally been political divides - conservatives in the south and liberals in the north - as well as fights over scarce vs. abundant water, etc.
Many outsiders view The Golden State as liberal. But historically much of California has been home to conservatives and conservative movements - such as The John Birch Society. Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon both cut their political teeth in California politics before ever heading to Washington DC. There is also a tremendous military presence in California - both active and retired - especially in southern Cal.
Many people who have never lived in California don’t have a true idea of what the state is really like. Most know about Hollywood/the entertainment industry, and the general Los Angeles area - through fiction TV, movies, and Disneyland. However the true California - immense and diverse - in every aspect imaginable - is too overwhelming in its scenic and cultural offerings and contributions to appreciate - unless you reside there and take a lot of road trips. That’s how you experience genuine California. Big-hearted people and wonderful places Californians know as home.

It's like rats... you're either breeding them or getting rid of them.
With people, you're either encouraging the downward spiral or doing something meaningful to help stop it.
California is definitely the former.
