With Opening Day approaching, and six starters for five spots, I'm guessing that they will send Mize to the minors, and consider it a rehab assignment after his time off for surgery and recovery. His spring training WHIP is also a lot higher than the WHIPs of Olson and Manning (https://www.mlb.com/stats/pitching/detr ... g-training).

Baez has been so bad that the only alternative might be a trade to another team with a package of young players who aren't part of the core, like Bigbie, Leonard, Wentz, and Baddoo. If necessary, maybe throw in a Vierling, Faedo, or Brieske. Pick up a chunk of his salary and try to sell it as a "change of scenery" trade.

Baez's awful spring has helped keep the spotlight off of Torkelson's terrible spring (.114 after 14 games).

Opening day starters will be Tarik Skubal vs. Garrett Chochet.

It would have been Dylan Cease but he's with San Diego now.

Weather forecast is 49 and overcast in Chicago for Thursday.

The Tigers have optioned Akil Baddoo and Ryan Kriedler, and reassigned Justyn-Henry Malloy. Pitching spots are still TBD.

Former Tiger Michael Lorenzen has signed a one year deal with Texas.

Eduardo Rodriguez is starting the year with Arizona on the injured list.

Anyone want to place a bet on how many starting arms crap out this year?

Matt Manning is being optioned to AAA Toledo to start the season. It must've been a helluva competition for that fifth spot in the rotation because I thought Manning looked pretty decent when I saw him.

I thought it would be Mize but then he had a great start on Wednesday.

Manning was probably most hurt by the number of home runs he gave up (6). He's also been working on a new set of pitches so some time in the minors might help him fine-tune them.

I liked Hinch's quote about this situation. It shows that the team is building up depth.
I think it’s a sign of a healthy organization when you have the dilemma of these decisions.

The Tigers fared quite well in Grapefruit League play. Twenty wins is pretty good!

I hope this translates to some good success in the regular season.

Tigers have a serious shot to win the division. I got +360 and put a few bucks on em.

The division remains ass after 15 Natty Ices and some Taco Bell, so that helps. Minnesota remains decent but no one will ever confuse them with the '76 Reds or '98 Yankees.

KC improved in the offseason but they had practically nowhere to go BUT up. I don't think they're a serious contender or anything.

Cleveland was a house of cards propped up by Francona for the last few years, they're going to really miss him. Not a lot of hitting besides Ramirez.

The White Sox are a complete dumpster fire of an organization embarking on what, their fifth or sixth rebuild since the 2005 world champion team flamed out the next year? They got a good haul of prospects from the Padres for Dylan Cease but they seemed to also have a good core of young players a few years ago and all it ever amounted to was one ass whipping by the Astros in the playoffs before it fell apart. And their owner has commenced a campaign for a new stadium so they're not spending money until that's done.

I think the Tigers finish second to the Twins but things are looking up and with a few breaks they can win the division.

California is not a state with legalized gambling, so I placed it with an individual who does this for a living. I call him my "special friend"....who recently bought a BMW X1 for his daughter, thanks in large part to my football picking prowess this past season.

But you can get those odds all day long on-line.
And I dont see where Minnesota has improved at all, honestly. Tigers are a good bet.

They’re +350 to win the division on DraftKings right now, if you wanna lay down a couple bucks, MCRF.

I’ve got my gambling money tied up on some Premier League parlays. I might move some money to the Tigers depending on how well these bets go.

The Tigers have finalized their pitching staff for the start of the season, with Alex Faedo and Joey Wentz getting the last two bullpen spots over Bo Brieske and Miguel Diaz.

Here's how Baseball Reference projects the Tigers pitching staff for 2024, which I'm guessing is based mostly on past performance.

Pitcher Wins Losses
Kenta Maeda 6 7
Jack Flaherty 8 7
Joey Wentz 5 9
Tarik Skubal 7 6
Casey Mize 3 4
Alex Lange 5 4
Tyler Holton 3 3
Jason Foley 3 3
Will Vest 3 2
Andrew Chafin 3 3
Shelby Miller 3 2
Reese Olson 6 6
Alex Faedo 4 6

Totals: 59 62
162 games: 79 83

I'd expect better from Skubal, since he's available for the whole season, and Mize, based on how strongly he finished spring training. Wentz's record should be better, since he won't be starting. All of the other numbers look reasonable.

So I'll guess 85 wins. No playoffs, but they break past .500 and set the foundation for playoff contention in 2025.
