Detroit Tigers 2024

Post by moldyoldie » Thu Feb 08, 2024 1:55 pm

As it stands right now, the Tigers may end up with a six-man starting rotation once the season gets going in earnest. However, I'm counting on the usual spring training arm injury(ies).

The gambling sites have them going about break even this season. I think I’ll sit out betting their win total this time around as I think it goes either way.

Yes, in 2023, new free agent Michael Lorenzen was supposed to start the season in the Tigers' rotation, but didn't pitch until the 14th game. By that measure, I'm guessing that one of the two new free agents (Maeda or Flaherty) will start the season on the injured list.

If everyone's healthy, I'd guess that Mize beats out Olson for a starting spot.

I'm hoping that they make the same kind of jump this year that they made from 1977 (74-88) to 1978 (86-76).

The 25 and under players in 1978 included Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell, Lance Parrish, Steve Kemp, Jason Thompson, and Jack Morris.

The 25 and under players in 2024 include Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, Colt Keith, Parker Meadows, Akil Badoo, Justyn-Henry Malloy, and Reese Olson, along with others just above that age (Tarik Skubal, Kerry Carpenter, Matt Manning).

The main question mark in that comparison is the performance by the older veterans. What players on the 2024 team will have seasons similar to the 1978 seasons by Jack Billingham (15-8), Jim Slaton (17-11), and Rusty Staub (121 RBIs)?

The Tigers may have enough to contend in a weak division. Greene has to stay healthy and the rookies have to prove their worth. Tork and Carpenter have to come through in the clutch, something the former had some trouble with last season.

I will predict 90 wins for the Tigers, 2nd in the Division, no wild card spot in the playoffs.

I just hope they have less arms breaking than last year. I hope they have a new conditioning coach.

The Tigers signed Gio Urshela to a one year contract.

Tigers lost 22-10 in the spring opener.

Detroit pitchers walked 14, and hit another five. They also gave up eight runs in the ninth inning.

Englert served up three home runs, including a 470 foot moon shot to Spencer Jones, who is one of the Yankees top prospects.

I expect at least two or three puff pieces articles at both detnews.com and freep.com within the next 24 hours. The horrendous performance of today will be de-emphasized by both newspapers. Both publications are an embarrassment to sports journalism, except when it comes to the Detroit Lions.

Hell, the Freep has given such a puff piece penned by Jeff Seidel top billing on its home page as we speak.
Morgan Wallen is a piece of garbage.

I've not been impressed with the Tigers thus far.

They gave up a four run lead today and tied 9-9. Also gave up an inside the park home run.

Relax.

The boatload of runs given up in the 8th and 9th yesterday and in the 8th today, along with the inside the park HR, were given up by minor leaguers who won’t even be on the 40 man roster come opening day. It’s spring training and meaningless

As Ernie Harwell used to say “I don’t pay attention to how the team is doing until the last week of spring training.” He was right. Just don’t get hurt.

And they say that pitchers are usually ahead of the hitters early in spring training.

But the good news is that almost all of the pitchers were not projected to make the big league squad. The only one that was, the starter Reese Olson, will hopefully benefit from this wake-up call that nothing is guaranteed in the majors.
