I would have liked this trade better if it had happened, say, 7 or 8 years ago, but the Red Wings today acquired 35-year-old defenseman Jeff Petry, son of former Tigers pitcher Dan Petry. The Wings gave up D-man Gustav Lindstrom and a low 2025 draft pick, and Montreal is paying half of Petry's salary. Here's hoping Jeff chooses to wear his dad's old uni number 46 here.
I wonder if this was in the works for a while. We were at the Red Wings' select-a-seat event in June, and Dan Petry and Larry Murphy were there for meet-and-greets. When I got to meet Murphy, I motioned toward Petry and kiddingly asked him if he thought Stevie Y might try to trade for his son. Murphy didn't answer the question directly but sort-of slyly said Jeff Petry would be a good add if the price was right. Guess they found a price they liked.
