Detroit Tigers 2023
Re: Detroit Tigers 2023
I have to admit that I'm feeling very happy today that it's finally the last day of Miguel Cabrera's player contract with the Tigers. Many people have been waiting for this day for years.
I won't try to take anything away from the people who are celebrating the end of Cabrera's career for other reasons. But it will be so wonderful to get his excessively long, very expensive, and often very wasteful contract off the books and spend that money on something more productive.

Cabrera is overrated and was grossly overpaid. Hasn't done shit for the past six or seven seasons. Won the triple crown in a year where HR production in the majors was unusually low among leaders in that category; he got lucky.
I have no problem with the Tigers keeping him around in a largely ceremonial role. Could prove useful in attracting Latin American talent.
Will his buddy Avisail Garcia be in attendance for his final game?

Can you elaborate on overrated? The guy will be in the Hall of Fame.
He certainly stuck around too long no question but that doesn't equate to overrated. I won't bother to list a bunch of career achievements but 500 plus homeruns 3000 plus hits and a .300 plus batting average is pretty elite.

Definitely a hall of famer without question, but the past six or seven years dilute the great accomplishments of the first 10 to 12 years of his MLB career, in my opinion.
A sore spot with me is his failure to produce in the 2012 World Series.
He's also a bit of a shitbag as a human being.
I don't hold him in as high of regard as Isiah Thomas, Steve Yzerman or Barry Sanders.

Isaiah Thomas? I've heard he has quite a few skeletons in his closet, also. To say the least.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 12:46 pmDefinitely a hall of famer without question, but the past six or seven years dilute the great accomplishments of the first 10 to 12 years of his MLB career, in my opinion.

What I was trying to say is Thomas's accomplishments as a Piston impressed me more than Cabrera's accomplishments as a Tiger. Thomas was also a great leader in the locker room during his time here and showed tremendous grit in the post season.

Well, in what may be the last at-bat of his career, Miggy didn't get a single pitch to hit -- four straight balls!
(Edit)
My god, he's playing first base! He got an unassisted put-out.
(Edit #2)
Marvelous emotional send-off.

If (and I think it was) that at bat was scripted, kudos to the Guardians for playing along. Quite the tribute.

Ya think that unassisted put-out was scripted as well? I was thinking the same was true on both those occasions well after the fact.Robert Faygo wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 5:27 pmIf (and I think it was) that at bat was scripted, kudos to the Guardians for playing along. Quite the tribute.

And one last Gatorade shower for the road!

I flip flopped the wins and losses - not bad for someone who doesn't "know shit about fuck" when it comes to baseball.

Listened to most of the game on the radio. Dan Dickerson calling Miggy's unassisted put out as if they just won the World Series....God damn I miss Ernie more and more every year that goes by. Dan's shtick I'm sure appeals to the douchebags who live in Royal Oak but tell everyone they "live in the D", but for everyone else it gets old real fast.
Re: Detroit Tigers 2023
You'd think that a guy who had just won the Triple Crown could have figured out a way to foul off this pitch.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 12:46 pmA sore spot with me is his failure to produce in the 2012 World Series.
Re: Detroit Tigers 2023
That whole spectacle yesterday was wearying. I attended the final games of life-long Tigers Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell in the 1990s, and it was nothing like that. I usually buy a newspaper on Monday morning, but I just couldn't read any more about it.Graham Wellington wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 10:08 pmListened to most of the game on the radio. Re: Detroit Tigers 2023
Your second to last post above was perfectly timed. Nicely done!
Many kudos for finding that video gem.
I was so pissed off at the Tigers' performance in the first 3 games that I actually turned down free tix to game 4. I didn't want to sit outside in 38 degree temps and wintry precip to watch that shit.
Not only could he have fouled off that 2-2 pitch in the 10th, he should've & could've nailed it for a line drive.
