I was a big fan, or I should say a "little" fan standing next to him when I saw him and the rest of the Pistons at Metro Airport. He was graciously signing autographs for the plethora of fans who gathered around him. I had nothing for him to sign. Besides, I was too cool for such things. :razz I was also browsing magazines along with then-coach Dick Vitale. Lanier wasn't just big, but B-I-G big! He wore a size 22 shoe. Even so, he had a soft lefty touch from mid-range and that most graceful of lost arts, the sweeping hook shot.
Small 10,000+ capacity Cobo Arena would rock when he and Jabbar would lock in battle.

RIP

I remember someone referring to him as Willie Lanier. Some sportscaster?
