John Madden is dead at age 85.

For me personally - he was my favorite NFL commentator growing up.

John Madden IS football. A devastating loss for all football fans.

My dad disliked John Madden’s announcing so intensely that when we had NFL games on with him and Pat back in the 1980’s, the game had to be muted.

I imagine there is now a whole generation that really only knows him as a video game entity.

R.I.P, John Madden I knew him when he was in the booth with Pat I didn't know he was the coach of the Raiders Madden the video game. All Madden Doc was quite good on Sat afternoon.

One of the best analysts in not just football but sports in general. May he R.I.P.

Reading and watching all the tributes, I had never known that it was essentially he that was responsible for the yellow first down line we see on every broadcast.

Fascinating. I must say, it has caught on better than Fox's glowing hockey puck which I also liked.

All of the above plus he never had a losing record as a head coach. Those Oakland teams of the 70s were incredibly entertaining.

A big loss. I knew of his coaching ability, enjoyed him at the peak of his broadcasting career in the early 90s, and loved the Madden video game series from its inception until 2011. Rest well, John.

Here's something I stumbled on that says a lot about John Madden's character. It relates to New England Patriot receiver Darryl Stingley's crippling injury after getting hit by Oakland's Jack Tatum:

"Tatum's coach, John Madden, and many of his teammates extended their sympathies to Stingley. Madden's post-game rush to the hospital was the beginning of a close friendship. In fact, during his visit Madden found himself the lone visitor in the hospital. No one from the Patriots was there, until Madden called their team and the team's charter plane, in takeoff mode, finally returned to the gate."

I've never read a single negative remark or rumor about Madden and have seen a heap of positive things through the years. He was not only tremendously successful in his professional pursuits, but it appears he was a genuinely good person despite his fame and fortune. An iconic coach and sports broadcaster. A true innovator, too, in the sports broadcasting realm.
