I am disheartened by Thom's behavior during the broadcast and even more disheartened by the fact he quite possibly is a bigot.
MW, you are probably one of the few people on the board I would even broach this subject with. This isn't a "Bryce Wiseass" post but one I am sincere about.

Are you disheartened by the fact he may be a bigot or are you disheartened by the fact he may be bigoted against a certain group? It seems to me, that by the definition of the word bigot, we have them a plenty on this board. I could list at least six regular posters that display overt bigotry toward Trump supporters, Christians as well as Impressive (that's my new word for old, everybody else is borrowing words and changing the meaning, why not me?) conservative guys like me. Those people are most intolerant of the opinions expressed by those in the preceding camps and as such, they are bigots. No one calls them bigots, pond scum or shreds of human debris.

In today's world, if you're bigoted against the right group, you get a promotion. The wrong group, and you're fired. If bigotry is wrong, it should be wrong across the board.

Bigotry against bigots is acceptable.

Bigotry on the part of someone due to certain groups' sexual orientation, religious affiliation (so long as such religion doesn't condone mental or physical violence), gender, nationality, skin color, etc. is flat out WRONG.
Are you disheartened by the fact he may be a bigot or are you disheartened by the fact he may be bigoted against a certain group?
I am disheartened by the fact he may be a bigot.

Frankly, "bigot" might not even be the right term. Brennaman's views might rise to the level of flat-out hatred. I have no idea; I don't know what the man truly feels in his heart.

I can only hope he meant the remark as a crude and highly inappropriate attempt at humor.

When former Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy made those extremely offensive comments about Trump supporters several years back, I thought the league should've forced him to apologize, he should've received a harsh suspension, and he should've received a large fine. The fact he largely received a free pass from the league, the Pistons organization and local & national media is appalling.

THAT answered my question quite well as to where your head and heart is on the matter. Thank-you!

Thom will not be doing NFL games for Fox Sports this year I wouldn't be surprised if Fox fired him for what he said. And Thom should always know the mic is always on his on-air apology was pretty bad more begging to keep his job than anything else.

FOX Sports: The language used was abhorrent, unacceptable & not representative of our values

FOX News: so you're saying he's available to host a nightly talk show?

(Wish I could take credit)

With the greatest respect MW, I'd be more impressed with your admirable stance of not condoning the behavior if it were put into practice elsewhere on your fine website. You know exactly what I'm talking about and it's a disappointment it needs to even be mentioned.

The sin of Sodom and Gomarrah was inhospitality:

“As I live, saith the LORD GOD, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom,

pride,
fullness of bread, and
abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters,
[Inhospitality] neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy, therefore I took them away as I saw good.” -Ezekiel 16:48-50

I did want to add that given his sincere written apology, I think he should be suspended for the rest of the year and be given the option to come back next year following sensitivity training. Seems fair to me.

Listen again to the comment. Listen to the tone of how he says the word "f-g'. To think this is the first time he has used the word, or there is not some vitriol behind it, is shortsighted.

I watched the original clip and his apology. It definitely wasn't a slip of the tongue, and it definitely seemed as if he'd possibly used the word before. I also thought it was bad when he interrupted the apology to call a home run. I always liked Thom and actually played video games with his voice as play-by play. I think he deserves to be suspended at best. It would not surprise me if he's quietly fired with no notice whatsoever. It's 2020, and he should know better not to use language like that. It's kind of a shame though, as both him and his father have called Reds game for decades, so it's the end of an era.

I go up to Michigan International Speedway for NASCAR cup races, and I always listen to the MRN feed using my scanner. At the track, you actually get to hear what's being said by the announcers during commercial breaks. The people in the control room warn the announcers when the mics are hot. You think on every live broadcast, every person would be warned as to tell them not to say anything bad over the air.

Looking at his apologies, I don't think Thom understands the impact of saying words like that today on live TV.

He said the word like he had said it many times before. I do believe in forgiveness though.

As for the word, some people may not understand that several of us were tormented with bullying and that word. So much bullying, that my nerves are literally frayed, and I am dealing with possible multiple sclerosis like symptoms as a result years later. I can't see a doctor for an official diagnosis because he's closed because of the spread of COVID because fuck boys like you won't wear a mask.

So STFU, McLovin', you don't know what you're talking about. It's not just a word.
