Melanie Safka's biggest hits included the #1 "Brand New Key" from late 1971 and the Top 10 "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" (inspired by her experience at Woodstock) with the Edwin Hawkins Singers from 1970. She had recently been working on a new album.

Lay Down was a great song.

What an incredible talent. She will be missed. “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” is an excellent tune with the Edwin Hawkins Singers, what an amazing combination with Melanie’s beautiful voice and the singers. “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” is one of my favorite songs from the year of 1970. R.I.P. Melanie Safka.
