Poor quality recordings

Post by stopnswop2 » Thu Apr 27, 2023 10:58 pm

What are some songs that no matter how many remasters it gets, still sounds awful?

Here are a few to start

Moody Blues - Go Now
.38 Special - Caught Up In You
Jimmy Soul - If You Wanna Be Happy
Jewel - You Were Meant For Me

With ELO, New World Record and Out of the Blue have always had a muddier sound than their predecessors. They're both still great albums, which is a credit to the band. But they don't sound as good as later work that ELO founder Jeff Lynne did for other artists (Tom Petty, George Harrison, Paul McCartney).

"Go Now" was cut to acetate disc in a makeshift studio at the Marquee Club in London. The "master tape" is a dub of the acetate disc that no longer exists. The group attempted to recut the song in the studio, but couldn't recreate the feel of that take.

I'm rather excited to hear the 5150 and OU812 remasters that are coming out. They have all the warmth of a microwave oven. Once those come out and the verdict is in, I'll return to this thread.

I was listening to my LP of The Big Chill soundtrack yesterday and Whiter Shade of Pale sounds really bad. I've heard much better recordings of it, so idk what the deal was.

I'm curious to know what it originally sounded like in 67. This soundtrack is from 83.

Can't imagine "Go Now" without that distortion. I think it fits.
