I did had "The Ultimate (Young) Rascals" when it came out on CD back in late 1986 BUT the sound quality was terrible. Same for Percy Sledge "Collection" from late 1987 & "The Otis Redding Story" (3 CD set) also from 1987 because Atco & Atlantic reissues didn't sound great. Also the David Bowie original RCA Victor compact discs during the mid 80's also sounded bad!! I also had the late Del Shannon reissue of "Little Town Flirt" (all tracks were in true stereo) which RHINO released in 1990 BUT the CD skipped. Same for The Outsiders "Capitol Collectors Series" (1966 - 1969) (1 CD) which also was skipping!!

I was listening to my LP of The Big Chill soundtrack yesterday and Whiter Shade of Pale sounds really bad. I've heard much better recordings of it, so idk what the deal was.

I'm curious to know what it originally sounded like in 67. This soundtrack is from 83.
The Big Chill soundtrack used the old Deram electronically reprocessed tape.

Here's a good sounding copy of the mono mix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxa6GUIkNac

The hit take was never mixed to stereo, but this alternate take shows how good it could sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhhwO5H2C8s

That 2007 remaster just sounds like they ran it through software to remove the "noise", but makes it sound worse, like I'm listening inside of a glass box or something is stuck in my ears.

I guess it's just always sounded bad and I forgot.

That stereo mix lost all the charm.

I guess distortion becomes part of some songs.
Like someone said earlier about Go Now too
