Your Very First

Post by moldyoldie » Fri Mar 11, 2022 11:26 am

I thought it would be a fun exercise to list your very first purchase or acquisition of recorded music in the various genres and formats available to you through the years. I'll go first.

Pop/Rock 45 rpm single:
"I Wanna Hold Your Hand" / "I Saw Her Standing There"
-The Beatles

Pop/Rock 33 rpm vinyl album:
The Spirit of '67
-Paul Revere & the Raiders

Classical 33 rpm album:
Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C major
-New York Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein, cond.

Jazz 33 rpm album:
Sun Ship
-John Coltrane

Country/Western 33 rpm album:
Ridin' High
-Jerry Jeff Walker

Pop/Rock cassette album:
Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)
-The Rolling Stones

Pop/Rock CD album:
Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars
-Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians

Classical CD album:
Ligeti: Lux Aerterna; Chamber Concerto; Ramifications for String Orchestra; Ramifications for 12 solo string players; Atmosphères
-Various artists

Country/Western CD album:
Waitin' On Sundown
-Brooks & Dunn

New age CD album: (I'm guessing on this)
Dreamtime Return
-Steve Roach

Pop/Rock EP:
Did Ya
-The Kinks

Pop/Rock song download:
"Looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well"
-Mike Doughty

Classical album download:
The Complete Beethoven Symphonies
-Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Leonard Slatkin, cond.

Pop/Rock song via person-to-person email:
"Colorado"
-Danny Holien

I've never purchased an 8-track!

You have some much more functional brain cells than me Moldie!

8-Track:
Never owned one

Pop/Rock 45 rpm single:
"Candy Man" - Sammy Davis Jr. This I do remember! My parents had me when they were young and were still buying 45s. This one was the first one that was "mine".

Pop/Rock 33 rpm vinyl album:
"Greatest Hits 1974-78" - Steve Miller Band. Got it as a Christmas gift from my parents

Classical 33 rpm album:
Never owned one - CDs were out when I got interested

Jazz 33 rpm album:
Never owned one - CDs were out when I got interested

Pop/Rock cassette album:
Never owned one. I skipped cassette albums entirely, going from LPs right to CDs. If I wanted an album on cassette, I'd record it myself.

Pop/Rock CD album:
"52nd Street" - Billy Joel. I remember clearly an episode of "Night Call" on WRIF when Peter Werbe played a CD for the first time ever. The conversation was enthralling. I saved up, bought a CD player and 52nd Street. I still have virtually all of my CDs, for no good reason whatsoever.

Classical CD album:
"Symphony No. 9 'From the New World'" - Dvorak

New age CD album:
"Incantations" - Mike Oldfield

Jazz CD album:
"Blue Train" - John Coltrane

Pop/Rock EP:
"The 12" Album" - Howard Jones

Pop/Rock song download:
Honestly, I have no idea. It was on Napster though before it was considered naughty.

Classical album download:
Have never downloaded a classical album

Pop/Rock song via person-to-person email:
Can't recall ever sharing commercial music via e-mail

A happy tune! Just curious, do you remember what was on the B-side?

For both vinyl rock album and single, the Monkees:

"A Little Bit You, a Little Bit Me" (single)
"More of the Monkees" (album)

First download was in 2004, Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" album.

I think my first CD was a collection of WW II-related big band swing that I got for Christmas and played a lot on my work computer.

I think my first 8-track was in the early 80s when I bought a car with an 8-track player. Remember listening a lot to the albums "Court and Spark" by Joni Mitchell and "The River" by Bruce Springsteen. My collection was helped by the phasing out of that format around the same time, with great closeout sales.

Technically, the very first records I ever owned (age 3, and obviously purchased by my parents) were:
- 45 RPM: either "Flashdance... What a Feeling" by Irene Cara or "Gloria" by Laura Branigan
- LP: Either Sesame Street Country, Mickey Mouse Disco, or Fraggle Rock

Once I started listening to more pop music in middle/high school...
- First pop album I owned: Amy Grant's "Heart in Motion" (cassette tape from my aunt's CD copy)
- First pop album I owned an original copy of (cassette): IIRC, Mariah Carey's "Music Box"
- First pop album I owned an original copy of (CD): IIRC, Madonna's "Ray of Light"
- First cassette single I owned: "I Know" by Dionne Farris
- First CD single I owned: IIRC, "How Do I Live" by LeAnn Rimes
- First album I ever owned of music made before I was born: the Mamas & Papas' greatest hits

This got me thinking deeep into my sanctum sanctorum. I vaguely remember a kids record player on which I'd play a bright red vinyl (or plastic?) record with a couple cartoon ravens or magpies (Heckle and Jeckle?) on the label. There was also a 45 by Alvin & the Chipmunks singing "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain".

My mother got me 'Ballad of the Green Berets' when it came out. Kind of expensive, even for that era. Now they are going for $1 at record shows.

I've recently been on a Fraggle Rock kick, rewatching the old series and also checking out the new reboot that's on Apple TV+. Of course, many of us in Michigan didn't need HBO to watch it back in the day - it aired Sunday evenings on CBC.

I also had a number of "storybook" records at that time. I only remember two of them. One was a retelling of the Hansel and Gretel story. The other was a double-sided record with (appropriate for this time of year) a couple of Easter stories, the "B" side of which was about a young Chinese immigrant girl named Ting Moy (although the label read "Ming Toy") who lived in (IIRC) San Francisco's Chinatown and was experiencing her first Easter. I think the "A" side was a Peter Cottontail story. Both sides of the record were posted on YouTube a while back but appear to have been removed. The copyright date on the Easter record was 1966 (I was born in 1980), so I'm thinking some of those records were inherited from my aunts/uncles (my youngest aunt would have turned 4 that year).

I've been following this thread since Moldy started it.
The more I ponder it, I think my first recording was a LP from CKLW of greatest hits. A gold cover if I'm not mistaken.
