Get Off The Stage !!!

Post by sfpcc » Sat Mar 27, 2021 10:36 pm

Has anyone out there ever seen an opening act get booed of the stage. I've never seen it but I've heard a few stories, (The Clash opening for Who at the Silverdome for example.)

Billy Joel, solo, opening for The Beach Boys at Pine Knob in the early 70's. He ended up storming off stage while yelling out "choice words" at the less-than-enthusiastic crowd. Was never a "fan". The Beach Boys ROCKED!

Thank you. You've got a lucky face. The end.

Aaron Lewis from the band Stained has a reputation for storming off stage. *profanity warning*

Same venue; different act, and - depending on who's relating the story - the 'artist' was booed, abused, or had 'items of endearment' tossed at him to get him off the stage...

It was nearly 40 years ago, during (one of what would become many) Rolling Stones' farewell tour in 1981 @ the Pontiac Silverdome. My altered memory had the crowd booing & throwing what appeared to be glass half-gallon jugs of vodka at Iggy Pop until he finally left and made way for Santana to take the stage and issue us some much-needed music prior to the main act.

I searched for, and found, other takes on the same event, which you may read here:

Physically this might not make sense, but I once read a article about an Iggy Pop concert in the 70's where a car battery was thrown at him, (yeah I know it sounds dodgy.)

I once heard my brothers friend talk about a concert where Kix Opened for The Ramones. He said they threw copies of their record at the audience. They were thrown back and hit a member of the band.

Then there is the opposite case. When Def Leppard opened for Billy Squire in 1993 for example.

You mean that people liked Def Leppard better? Not surprising, Squier was a has-been by that point.

I could understand why if he wasn't feeling good.

I don't seem to hear much about Billy anymore. Haven't heard anything about him performing in a few years. Not sure if he's reclusive or not. The controversial video from the mid-'80s killed his career in a way.

King-Bee's, Toledo Speedway Jam, early 80's. 3 songs I think.

Both were by 1993... but Def Leppard had a much deeper catalog, and never tried to be Boy George in a video.

Kix opening for the The Ramones? Can't see where fans of one would like the other. Opening act may as well have been Weird Al or The Easy Hoes...

I had to laugh at some of the reports of items Iggy Pop would have thrown at him on stage, and it being a 'thing' like a display of endearment... but a car battery is downright hilarious. Not a fan, and Iggy never appeared in any of my playlists, until an extended version of his take on "White Christmas" showed up on Amazon Music a few years back... :blink

Fuzzy recollections of a couple of opening acts treated, um, impolitely, by the crowd.
Robert Palmer, opening for either Quicksilver, Renaissance or Robin Trower (?), Leo Kottke (virtuoso acoustic guitarist, solo) opening for (?), I think both at Masonic.
