"I Wish It Would Rain" by the Temptations.
This was the second song of a Trilogy written by Rodger Penzabene, written about the stages of a failed relationship.
The first was "You're My Everything", the third was "I Could Never Love Another After Loving You". As "I Wish It Would Rain" was bounding up the charts, Rodger Penzabene committed suicide at the age of 23. Sad. Too bad "Only The Strong Survive" by Jerry Butler didn't come out before all that happened.

"Don't Let The Rain Fall Down On Me" by The Critters. #39 Hot 100 1967.
The Critters included Don Ciccone, later of The Four Seasons and Tommy James. Also Jim Ryan, who was a longtime guitarist with Carly Simon. At a performance with "The Hit Men", he told the story of how Warren Beatty came to the backstage entrance of a Carly Simon performance demanding to see Carly. Jim Ryan didn't recognize Warren in his civvies and wearing thick glasses, and told him to get lost. Carly was happy that he stood up to him and told Jim Ryan that Beatty deserved not being recognized.
The Critters are from Plainfield, NJ. So are George Clinton/Parliaments/Parliament/Funkadelic originally.
