Rain

Post by sfpcc » Fri Nov 06, 2020 2:01 pm

Can anyone out there think of any song with the word rain in it? Here are two to start:

Beatles / Rain
Led Zeppelin / The Rain Song

There are a whole pile of rain song lists from different eras. Just do a search for "rain songs".

Here's one you probably won't find on a list. It got a lot of airplay in the Michigan region in 1967. It's "It's Gonna Rain" by a "local" "garage" band, The Unrelated Segments, from Taylor, Michigan. I think they sang it on "Swing Lively" on Channel 6 Lansing.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Randy Newman wrote a song in the '60's titled "I Think It's Going To Rain Today", that's been covered by many artists. I haven't heard many of the cover versions, but my current favorite is by Joe Cocker from 1975.

Wow, no one's mentioned "Let It Rain" by Eric Clapton.

Purple Rain - Prince

"We're so sorry, Uncle Albert
But there's no one left at home
And I believe I'm gonna rain."

- Sir Paul

Yeah, it's in the song, not the title.

Here's one that has been largely forgotten, even though it reached #10 Hot 100, "Tell It To The Rain" by The Four Seasons.

Consider other #10 songs from that era heard every day in many formats, such as "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison. Yup. #10 for ONE WEEK. ONE WEEK IN THE TOP 10!

Here's another song, "Rhapsody In The Rain" by Lou Christie, which reached #16 Hot 100. Both "Rhapsody In The Rain" and "Brown Eyed Girl", which also mentions the "days when the rains came", were censored by many radio stations until they overdubbed the relatively mild, in retrospect, taboo reference, in censored airplay versions. This probably hurt the sales of both records and pushed down the peak chart positions.

According to ARSA, WTAC Big 600 was the very first station, at least in the US and Canada, to play "Brown Eyed Girl". Peter Cavanaugh (wrote "Local DJ") was kind of edgy as a PD. It peaked at #1 on WTAC 600, WKNR 1310, WGRD 1410, and WVMO 98.3 Monroe, #2 at CKLW, #3 at WCFL and #4 at WLS. So it was a kind of regional hit in that sense.
