Hey, some of us like to talk about happenings in other areas of the country, too. Here's the place to do it.

Rimshotters Serving Montreal Go to Jesus

Two radio stations owned by Martz Communications in New York State, both serving Montreal with a Top 40 and Country format, has flipped to Christian networks K-Love and Air1 yesterday after being sold to the Educational Media Foundation:

These were never legitimate Montreal metro signals. Yes, the TX sites in the mountains of NE New York did give what appeared to be C2 or C3 signals on paper about C1 equivalent strength in the direction of Montreal, especially in the case of WYUL, but Montreal is about 60 miles from each station's TX site.

Good luck trying to pull in a rimshooter from 60 miles away amid a sea of intermod.

My guess is reliable reception was limited to the SW suburbs of Montreal.

Montreal has had an in-market, powerfully signaled, English language CHR for decades (Mix 96 / Virgin Radio 96).

Obviously there's no public way of knowing how many listeners these rimshots actually had in the immediate Montreal area, since the public Numeris ratings don't show out-of-market listening. Among Anglophone listeners, the #1 pop music station is 925 The Beat by a long shot (second only to 800 CJAD overall), but among Francophones, Virgin is slightly ahead (likely reflecting the competition from Rythme (CFGL) and Rouge (CITE) for Francophone AC listeners). Of course, CKOI wipes the floor with both of them among Francophones.

Meanwhile, the only OTA country-music option available in the Montreal area now is the Kahnawake Mohawk First Nation station (KIC Country 89.9), which really only covers the west side. Those with HD radios can also pick up an HD2 from suburban Longueuil. The area did have an AM country station, 1040 CJMS, but it lost its license not too long ago.
