When I was in school in the 1990s, we routinely went to school when temperatures were sub-zero and wind chills I'm sure even well below that. I remember the local school rule being something like for outdoor recess, we kids WERE FORCED to go outside at recess time if the actual air temperature was above something like minus 5 or minus 10 degrees. I don't remember anyone ever getting frostbite.

Prepare for the conditions by properly dressing yourself and the conditions will no longer be life threatening.

NOW, if you really want to combat "life threatening" conditions when the weather gets bad, let's start by revoking the drivers' licenses of the high volume of people who drive like idiots when the roads get bad.

I don't know where you are, but unless it snows 6" with gusts to 30mph, schools will be open in my area.
I guess you forgot that Queen Whitmer likes to close down the state, including all schools, universities, and even the post office, when it gets cold outside. This from the year before Covid hit:

Whitmer didn't close universities - she didn't have the ability to do that. U-M took a rare step to close for two days at that time: https://record.umich.edu/articles/wind- ... -canceled/

Your school didn't have kids outside with -40 wind chills, get real. You are talking out your ass again. That weather is life threatening to people who have to walk to work or are experiencing homelessness.

We watched an idiot in a brand new Discovery with all season tires almost drive off a steep embankment yesterday. I agree that some people aren't ready for winter driving.

That was a particularly bad situation.

My total 48 hour snowfall is 16" in my usual measuring spot. It's still snowing.

In my district it's the temp. Once it gets below 12 degrees or so, even if the skies are sunny and the wind is calm, they'll close.

Tomorrow is MLK Day, so kids are already off. On Tuesday we will likely have school...

With a mass of frigid Arctic air descending on much of the United States this upcoming week, meteorologists and public health officials are well aware that a North Dakotan and a South Texan are unlikely to agree on what amounts to “extreme cold.”

As such, the National Weather Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stress that there is no set definition for extreme cold, and the point at which forecasters will warn residents that the plunging temperatures are a danger to them is calibrated to the region’s prevailing climate.

“Everyone’s extreme is a different level,” said Ketzel Levens, a meteorologist in the Weather Service’s office in Duluth, Minn., where the average daily temperature in January is a crisp 9.4 degrees. “Folks up north might have better protection. They might have a lot more clothes and layers. Our houses, our water infrastructure, they’re built to a different standard.”

And so if you warned Minnesotans every time it is merely freezing cold, you would struggle to get their attention when it was dangerously cold. Ms. Levens’s office issues a wind chill advisory only when the temperature reaches minus 25, and a wind chill warning when it reaches 40 below.

While it won’t be historically cold in Duluth this week — temperatures are expected to reach as low as minus 7 degrees — Ms. Levens said that residents might still feel the bite of the cold as the city is coming off its second warmest December on record.

Roughly 1,000 miles south, the Dallas-Fort Worth region won’t get as cold as Duluth this week, with a low temperature of 14 degrees. But the freezing temperatures there could pack a more significant punch, said Tom Bradshaw, a meteorologist in the service’s office in Fort Worth, where the average high temperature for January is 56 degrees.

In Lansing the daily high was about 4 deg back then. Not that bad.

Actually the high one of those days was -4... wind chills were -30 or better and that's why they did that.

Was at a diner this morning shooting the breeze with the Grumpy Geritol Gang. Got talking about school closings just like y'all are now.

One interesting comment was "back in the day" kids were made to walk when it was colder than when schools closed today. But he seems to remember more stories about frostbite than he does now.
